are ct scans reliable for diagnosing appendicitis?

hi last tuesday i had intense pain in my upper left abdomen pain got worse and started to feel pain in my lower right side which made me run to hospital anyways the hospital did a ct scan without contrast said everything looked fine and bloods were okay but had blood in my urine? then next night pain got worse in lower right side so went to a different hospital for a second opinion they ran test said my white cell count was high and had ketones in urine no blood anyways next day they decided to do another ct scan this time with contrast to check my appendix everything came back looking okay to then so they said it could be a bug and go home. im now at home its been 7 day sense symptoms started.my feeling of wanting to vomit all the time and not eat has kinda passed but im still having the the pain! are these ct scans reliable for picking up appendicitis? i dont understand i had classic symtoms the high wbc and wanting to be sick but no fever and they send me home. do you think i sould look more into this or should just move on and take their advice that it could just be a bug.

Hi there, im thinking, blood and ketones in your urine could possibly signify a urine infection...I think so. Are you having any urgency or frequency of going for a wee? I mean, more than usual? My temperature doesn't show up, not always, so when I presented with appendicitis they didn't take much notice until they saw the blood test results. What were your CRP [c-reactive protein] results? That will show up how much infection is in the body. In the UK it used to be called [and maybe sometimes still is] ESR test. I personally don't think a CT is a definitive yes or no test for appendicitis. But the wanting to be sick could be a sign of a [need to get antibiotics and fairly urgent treatment for] a urine infection. If it is that, and it's just left, there could be damage to the kidneys. Do you know if the CT checked your kidney area? And also you may have [usually little] kidney stones that are trying to pass through. Hope this is not confusing you in any way. I wasn't vomiting/never vomited at all before whilst I had appendicitis; not everyone doe. But some doctors and nurses believe it can't be 'appendicitis' if you haven't vomited. Good luck with it all. Are you in the UK?

Did they do a urine culture, mine came back positive but they still took the appendix they wouldn't give me pain relief or antibiotics in the hospital incase the appendix ruptured and the medication would mask it

Hi
It could just be "grumbling appendix" at the moment. I just had a CT from my consultant and he told me CT scans are very very detailed nowadays and can detect the slightest shadow etc.
Obviously I am not a medical professional or giving you advice merely stating my experience. Mine burst and I had a fever, vomiting, constant pain to the point where I couldn't walk, that was over a period of 24hrs, it happened very quickly!
I think if you've had 2 CTs and they have both come back normal! What about a urine infection? Have you had antibiotics?

Hmm, this is strange. How's the pain now? I think you must be in America, cos you used the term blood work. I was just curious to know if you were in the UK because I was 'neglected' and tho I was promised many times, 'you're next for theatre!' this didn't happen until 24hours [they reckon 'just under] later. And I've had over 5 years of chronic pain. Last week I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which can be triggered by infection. By the time I got to theatre, my appendix had perforated and was gangrenous. The last thing I want to do is scare you, but I'm not the only person to have been neglected/let down by the NHS. And if the pain has [?suddenly] stopped, this is possibly when your appendix may have already burst. Are you lethargic, or kind of dragging yourself around, with a kind of mild disorientation? Have they considered tests like barium meal/barium 'swallow'/follow-through? Hang in there, we are rooting for you

That's good. Will you be able to take someone with you? Sometimes it's hard for ourselves to speak up for ourselves. Thinking of you tomorrow and hoping you get to the bottom of all this.

the doctor didn't wanna do the blood test because i had a white cell count of 10.7 so he thinks that makes me fine lol what a joke anyways i was very firm and demaded a full more in depth blood check up he finally agreed to do it. getting the esr test dunno if he put that other one in. hopefully get results in 3 days and hopefully wont end up in hospital again before then. so frustrated because i have no idea what is causing all this.

I was wondering about that condition too, Faye. In the UK the treatment would be to remove blood, almost like 'giving blood' as the only way to get the iron out of one's body. Matie if this is what you've got, it needs your attention, as it can seriously affect your heart...Don't want to distress you, just so you know, in case that's what it is...Okay, I'll just say it! My brother had a massive high iron levels, drank heavily for years and suffered a sudden fatal heart attack in December. He refused to get a repeat blood test. He was only 45. This is why I was also wondering about this condition. How old are you, Matie?

Here's my story: I was at a sporting event (watching), when all of the sudden, I felt like 5 people were stabbing me, I couldn't sit, stand or lay to find any comfort. I called my mom to come pick me up (I am 15 and do not have my license yet). I got into the car and started screaming. I didn't know what was happening, but there was a sharp pain in the center of my abdomen. My mom wanted to take me to the ER right then, but I told her I wanted to wait and see if the pain went away. It didn't leave, but it did move it's way over to the right side of my abdomen, and I kept feeling extremely nauseous. A day later at 4 in the morning, I finally let my mom take me to the ER. The first ER doctor told me I had "textbook appendicitis" and all we would need was a CT scan and the surgeons would take it out as soon as possible. They gave me a CT and they saw a small appenicolith and enlarged lymph nodes, but... they decided to wait until the next morning to make the ultimate decision and run a few tests to see if things got worse. So, they admitted me into the hospital, and I stayed the night. The next morning, they didn't see anything strange in my labs, so they really had no reason to take it out. No fever, no weird blood cell counts, and they honestly didn't know what to do with me. So, again, they had me spend the night. The next morning, I was feeling a little better, and they told me that it could be a number of things; ovarian cyst, mesenteric adnitis, and a few other things. They said that if it was mesenteric adnitis, that it would go away in less than 2 weeks. That day they sent me home. The day after that, I had the same sharp pain in my lower right abdomen, and since then, it hasn't gone away. I would go to appointments with my pediatrician and she would ask if things had gotten better, and each time, my answer was no. Every morning, I wake up sick and lean over the toilet and gag for around 15 minutes, and I'm always in pain, but some days it's a lot worse than others, and around 4 times a week, I will have a massive amount of pain for a few hours straight, then it dies down. A few weeks ago I had my first appointment with a GI specialist where he told me that he wanted another CT scan, and brought up a few things he thought it could be (mesenteric adnitis being one of them). I then was confused, saying that the doctors in the ER had told us mesenteric adnitis would last 2 weeks at most, and it has been A LOT longer than 2 weeks. He then told me he has seen it last up to a year and a half, and that it was a possibility that I had it. A day or so after that appointment, I was having really bad extreme pain, and I thought it would die down in an hour or so, but it didn't. It had been 2 days of the extreme pain with no relief, when I told my mom I needed to go to the ER. I went. They preformed another CT scan, and this time found nothing wrong with the appendix, but still enlarged lymph nodes. It's been a few weeks since the ER visit, and since then I have taken a serious turn for the worse. I also had a colonoscopy (that I should be getting the results back any day from). My doctor who did it, said that he didn't think he saw anything, but he sent it in to the labs to get it looked at. If nothing is found in the scope, they told me I would be diagnosed with mesenteric adnitis. I don't know what to do, I can barley function at school and haven't been able to go to a full day in 2 weeks.
This was a few months ago, and I ended up being diagnosed with mesenteric adnitis (after 3 and a half months of dealing with this) My mother, however, did not listen to the diagnosis and went to a sergon and had my appendix taken out. They tested it, and it came back positive for appendisidis. They re checked my second CT and saw that the radiologists had missed the two stones inside of my appendix. There are many cases of chronic appendisidis where there is nothing seen on the CT scans. I never ran a fever, threw up (though i was nausous).
I would think about getting it removed, if possible
Best of luck. None of this stuff is fun
