Are intrusive thoughts normal?

Hi,

I’m kinda freaking out. So I have generalized anxiety disorder and OCD. I always have had intrusive thoughts such as I thought I had schizophrenia, I thought I was suicidal, all that crazy stuff. I had images and thoughts of harming myself or harming others and it scares me because I brought it up to my friends and they said it’s not normal to have thoughts like that even if it’s just having images of punching someone in the face (which I’m sure a lot of people do.) I am 17 years old and take 50 mg of Zoloft which I have been on for quite some time. (I thought I should add that if that helps anyone lol). Are my intrusive thoughts normal or does that make me unnormal and mentally unstable? I don’t have them all the time but when I have anxiety about something or my mind is racing that’s when they pop up.

Hi JJ. DON'T worry. Intrusive thoughts are normal, even if they're violent et. al. As long as you feel no INTENT then you're fine. It may be a good idea to talk to your doctor about OCD, which in some forms causes intrusive thoughts. They may prescribe 'mindfulness' therapy or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as the gold standard in OCD treatment. Hope this helps, and take care of yourself smile
