Are there any options besides prostate surgery to reduce prostate size?

Hi - I am very fit and in my 60s . Just had a shoulder operation and as a result of the fact that i already have an enlarged prostate and combined with the drugs used to put me under - I have not been able to urinate. My operation was 2 weeks ago and i am still stuck with a catheter inside me. I am not that keen on an operation as about 6 years ago i had a double inguinial hernia repair where the surgeon strangulated my main nerve to my groin area. This has affected my sex life negatively as there is much less sensation . I am scared of complications and dont want to lose one of the joys in my life. Any suggestions from anybody

Hi. If, and only, if your prostate is greatly enlarged then do consider HoLEP laser reduction. It does result in RE but my op has been 100% successful with no effect on my sex life or anything other than RE. As HoLep involves no 'surgery' other than work done via the penis it doesn't affect any surrounding organs or nerves. It needs to be done by a skilled urologist. I had a catheter in for just 1 day after the op and it has been amazingly successful. BTW I did have a supra-pubic catheter inserted for 3 months before the op due to retention and I would recommend this instead of a long-term catheter in the penis. This op may not be relevant for you of course.

Like me you don't consider laser procedures as surgery. Quite frankly I found my two to be very easy to get over. Much easier than a biopsy.

Try a PAE.  No surgery, just a thin catheter fed to the prostate.  Particles are dispensed that cut off circulation to part of the prostate reducing its size.  Worked wonders for me.
