Are there shoes for severe ankle issues?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi, I have something like osteoporosis in my ankles, and I'm susceptible to ankle sprains/strains putting on regular shoes. Since I started getting ankle sprains putting on shoes, I stopped wearing regular shoes and wearing sandals/flipflops/etc. Finally I found loafers at Very comfortable and easy to wear, but the velcros are horrendous. I have to buy new pairs every 6-8 months. Does anyone know of alternative quality options out there where I wouldn't have to putting pressure on my ankles to put them on? I searched a lot on google but not having much luck. =[

    Hi Harsh,

I would advise strong sturdy regular shoes that provide good lateral support to your feet/ankles. This would rule out flimsy but fashionable shoes like flats and pumps, as well as flip flops and sandals, as you already noted.

You could easily spend a fortune on top shelf specialist shoes (and many people do)-- and if you have the budget go ahead. But less pricier regular shoes may be serviceable for your needs.

But first things first. The fact that you are prone to sprains indicates that supportive shoes are secondary in importance-- in fact you have unstable ankles-- perhaps due to untreated frequent sprains in the past.

If it were me I would see a top notch foot and ankle practitioner (not an ortho medico) who would assess the state of muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc. in the bad ankle, and then hopefully recommend a physical therapy regimen and other therapeutic approaches to strengthen and stabilize that weak ankle.

    Best wishes.
