Are these memory issues normal with anxiety?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am a 21 year old male and I have health/social anxiety. Many symptoms cause me concern but my doctor tells me not to worry however the ones that cause me most distress are the mental issues.

Is this normal? For example I am washing my hands in the bathroom and usually I would turn off the water then grab a towel but sometimes I just let the water run and grab the towel. I obviously don't leave the room with the water running I realise at the moment that I didn't turn it off but it causes me distress thinking why I didn't turn it off first then grab the towel. Other little things have been throwing me off to lately for example I leave the light on in my room and I remember later that I forgot to turn off the light. These little issues with memory throw me off because I get scared that its early stages of something more serious. How can I relax and tell myself that its all in my head and if I wasn't so into my thoughts all the time I could actually focus on what I am doing.

Mike, that is perfectly normal when you have anxiety.  When the brain is over anxious, we tend to  " be in our heads"  A lot and not consciously think about things going on around us. I do that all the time.   My problem is that I have 1 million things I'm thinking about it one time due to anxiety and I tend to overthink things. That's when I forget to do little things like you mentioned. What you were talking about is not a memory issue at all,  it's a symptom of having anxiety and that's all.

when I saw my neurologist for my anxiety symptoms I mentioned that to him and he told me my brain is over anxious and it's nothing to worry about.

what helps me is practicing what is called mindfulness. This is something taught all over the world. Part of it is being "in the moment". You focus on every little thing such as how something looks, feels,  smells etc. It might sound silly but it keeps you focused so your mind does not wander. It helped me to remember to do things like turn the light off etc. Or if I focus on the running water how it feels  my mind stays on that and then I remember to turn it off. There are great meditations on mindfulness on YouTube that have also help me a lot.  They have them for anxiety, sleep, depression etc.

Don't worry about anything like dementia because there's a difference between forgetting to turn the light off and putting your keys in the refrigerator thinking it's the proper place. Big difference!

anyway, it's nothing to worry about so I hope this helped you! It's very common. ????

This just sounds like you are absent minded and you just need to practice doing things in certain orders. There is nothing to worry about. Sometimes when we have other things on our mind we forget what we have been doing and forget to switch of a light or tap. You need to get in the habit. There is nothing wrong with Health or Brain.

I was the same when young and even now as a Pensioner I do some silly things still and now I move on with the odd chivvy from my Wife.

Stop worrying, live your live, you are human, we all do silly things every now and then

    Hi mike,🙂

     now this I relate too!!

walk in a room and forgot what they went in there for!! That’s a classic isn’t it.

I am the same with lights doors all sorts put the milk in the cupboard sometimes not the fridge!! Mess up tablets!

forget what I was saying sometime mid  sentence.

Im no dr but I think it’s because we are anxious and maybe preoccupied with thoughts ,worries etc so we do we do these little things. Then I chastise myself why did you do that what did you forget that? I really give myself a hard time about it. I think and this is just my own thoughts that this common you know. People who suffer with anxiety that I know do simarlar things too.

Hey so you leave the tap running then reach for the towel whatever way the tap you turned off the main point. I think I’ve done that too,

I hope you find some peace with this, I try to brush it off now when I do these things I try not to focus on it it will make me worse.

There’s a living in the moment that thing may sound silly but when you make your cup of tea for example you’re doing Just that think I’m putting the kettle on getting the cup getting the milk pouring the milk and all the way till you’ve made it. Sounds weird? I thought too but  when I’m (all over)  as I say, I do this With like making the bed I take my time. That’s if I do remember it’s hard because it seems weird. Makes you think about one thing. Not to overwhelming when I’ve done it it’s helped.

If you are really concerned  you could ask you dr for a test. I have forgotten it’s name now forgive me but there a memory test.

Please let me say to you though I really don’t think you’re well we are on our own with this.

    take care

Yes it's normal. I forget thing too. When you suffer from Anxiety your mind is over thinking many things so much it's hard to focus on something. I accidentally threw my mom's keys in the trashcan outside. I even forget to move my head when opening freezer or even doors. I'm very distracted I sometimes bump my shoulder with the wall when entering my room.😑 I started a truck again. I forgot I had already turned it on. I accidentally reversed one time instead of driving the truck forward causing me to h*t a pole. I park in front of my house. I don't know how to drive so I didn't calculate right and h*t the wall a little good thing nothing happened. smile Just yesterday I had sprayed so much clor*x in the kitchen I didn't smeel anything so I kept on spraying. My throat started burn*ng. I started coughing and breathing it. I had to get out. Sometimes I think I'm like a child. I forget these things are dangero*s. I know they are but I'm so caught up in my head. Splash some cold water in your face maybe you're tired or sleepy. Worried.. Take Care👍
