Are We Disabled?

Hi,

I'm planning a trip south next month by public transport and although I don't have a disabled 'sticker' or anything to say I am disabled, I'm wondering if anyone has? I have been told I'm disabled because I have an 'artifical hip' but never considered myself disabled? I walk with a stick  outside more often than not, and my hip aches at times but......disabled?

Oh it was a 'friend' that said I was disabled not a professional!

Although i have not had my thr yet my doctors always tell me i am disabled or that my disability is unusual and so on. I really should look into a blue badge really

I looked into a blue badge before my op and was told that they give them for hip replacements as you are going to recover and be "normal". They don't issue short term badges here in Norfolk. Don't know about other regions though. xx

I havent had my op yet but theres probs not much point trying. I should have tried years ago but iv only recently come to terms with my disability and really began to understand it as its progessively getting worse. If that made any sense 😂 xx

Good question. I am 2 wks post op from second THR and 9 wks from first. Will I need a wheelchair in airports when I fly March 10?

Probably not a wheel chair but I expect if you have to walk a long way it might be best to ask for help. I always think I would enjoy being driven in one of those golf buggy type things

My Physical Therapist said when traveling always take a cane, they will let us board the plane sooner...I think we are a bit disabled.

Thedefinition of disabled is someone who has a physical or mental condition that limits there lifestyle. I do think we are disabled. Like i said my doctors have always told me im disabled due to my condition hahaha

I would say no we are not disabled. The whole point of having the operation was surely to enable us to live a normal life again. Of course there will be some exceptions and I get that but I for one have embraced my new lease of life (at 55). I have thrown away my crutches and whilst I'm not dancing on tables I'm not limiting myself either. Having said all that I am now 11 months post op - so an old hippie and it took a while to get to this stage and I still have the occasional ache and pain but on the whole - best thing I did for a long time.

In all seriousness I do not think that someone who has had a successful THR is disabled, if that was their only problem. Some people who have had the op may be but probably for a variety of reasons not necessarily the hip.

The people with congenital and other hip and bone deformities will come under the disabled umbrella

Thats me then. I just assumed anyone with hip issues would have been classed to but maybe it does depend on other things to

I do have a friend who has had 2 replacement knees and one hip replaced. She has a blue badge

See i still think after a replacement you would have to limit yourself to prevent accident or is that not really neccissery?

I can walk faster and with no stick than one of my friends who has to use a wheeled stroller, and often give her a her a hand. I am reasonably careful but honestly forget about my hip during the working day

Aww thats good then. Im going to have to ask millions of questions at my pre op on tuesday because i think my situation is different to others haha but i hope ill be as good as you after the op 😊

You should be careful but not obsessive. I rarely think about it. I've done most things. I wouldn't bungee jump but I wouldn't have ever done that anyway. I wouldn't cycle in London (where I live) and probably wouldn't horse ride other than that I would say no such word as can't !!

When I go back to work (probably by April), I'll be going back on the Boris Bikes - but I have a good quiet route around the backstreets, and not at peak times either.

Very good to be so positive.

Take care and don't fall off.

I fell off a bike in India, because young cyclists were so interested and crowded all sides of me trying to chat and causing my fall.

      I haven't been on a bike since.

In Norway I was run over by a young cyclist!

On both occasions my knees spurted blood like a tap causing the young people to feel really contrite and apologetic.

I am sure you know the region where you cycle and all will be well.

My surgeon rang me this morning and we had a long chat and he is pleased with my overnight success yesterday. He's trying to get the manufacturers to lend him identical size parts to mine (non sterile - he says sterile ones cost many hundreds of pounds) so they can replicate my situation on the bench, to make a final decision, meanwhile he does not see any need for further surgery.  smile

Cycling in London is not to be undertaken lightly, and I cannot cycle outside anywhere just yet, from 6 weeks at least I believe, possibly more.  I will be taking up indoor cycling machine again since my physio cleared it yesterday.

All looking positive for a change.

I have a 'misplaced ceramic insert' - the ceramic 'socket' part is out of line with the metal shell it sits in.  So he is trying to get the same 'bits' so he can check there is no risk of the ceramic breaking (very bad) so we can  leave it like it is.

Thats really good news Graham that you wont need another operation and Im sure just what you need after all this time. You sound from your latest posts to be doing very well (finally) on your second road to recovery, long may it continue.

      👍🚀😀

Not too long I hope ............ but I know what you mean.

Sounds like I may be in for a fasttrack returnto work too ........... it will be such a relief to return to normality (whatever that is) of work in London, and being off this open-ended sick leave.

There - never thought I would be saying that !

Sounds complicated but good that it is being sorted out.

      Good luck with everything

      Great news Rocket!!!

My consultant also said no cycling on the road, the risk of being knocked off is too high and will probably mean another trip to him!! I thought about this deeply, as I love cycling outdoors, but decided cycling inside is better than nothing and will cycle around lakes etc that are car less at the weekends instead.

My brother has been knocked off his bike in London several times, I am not sure you will bounce so well Rocket or would want to, and probably it isn't worth it for one lousy taxi driver or whoever isn't looking that day.

I have since read one of your earlier posts to say you are going back on the boris bikes after all (should have read this before perhaps, instead of reading backwards) but a quiet route should be okay? I used to cycle over London Bridge in the rush hour. It was freezing in the winter with a raw wind and all the fumes in the summer! Somehow so miss the energy of London because of all of this. Time for a shopping trip!
