Arnica before/ after hip replacement?

Posted , 11 users are following.

I WAS RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND TO TAKE ARNICA TABLETS BEFORE AND AFTER MY HIP REPLACEMENT. WHEN I MENTIONED IT AT THE PRE-OP I WAS TOLD THE CONSULTANT DOES NOT ALLOW IT.

ANY IDEAS?

    variety of reasons

    possibly

risk of interacting unfavourably with other drugs he will be prescribing

    dislike of arnica

with homeopathic medication a lot of doctors dont agree with them and because it's not in a medical journal about complications with the meds they will give you at surgery I would say is the issue . But of course this is only a layman's thoughts on it .

hi. all medicines given by drs etc have gone thro rigours tests etc to be able to get a licence whilst herbal type needs dont. it's well known by drs/ pharmacists that some herbal meds interact and reduce efficiency of non herbal drugs - st John's wort is a gd example.

it may be your consultant has experience / knowledge of pts who took arnica pre OP/ post op and doesn't agree with its use.

my consultant / hospital used a tiny pump I had attached to the dressing on my wound for 10 days- pico pump which by negative pressure stops bruising and infection. I had only 2 tiny spots of bruising at the edge of the dressing to the side of my leg the rest was clear. it's quite expensive so not all places are using it.

my advise re your question tho ( I'm a retired nurse) if your consultant insists you dont use arnica then I wouldn't. but perhaps ask him why ??

Sometimes the doctors have specific reasons for some recommendation, but don't think they need explain to a mere patient.

For example my lot said no NSAIDs although I noticed they worked better than Tramadol post op.

I dug deep on Goog and sure enough NSAIDS slow bone regrowth. I haven't taken any NSAIDS since.

I think doctors are always worried about infection, so can go over the top in saying don't do/take things. I think once a surgeon has had a problem with something, they will be a lot more careful in the future, that is why we get rather a mish mash of advice.

If anything use bio oil pre surgery on area to be operated on and then post op once stitches/staples have been removed, thats what I was advised.

    Hope all goes well !
