Arthritic Knee

Hi all, been to see my consultant today and he told me that the decision as to whether I have a replacement knee is now entirely mine. I can either live with the arthritis and manage the pain, or, I bite the bullet and have a new knee. I'm 62 and really active. I'm afraid I bottled it and I agreed to wait and see him in six months. I really don't know what to do. Help!

Hello..like you I was unsure about the op and I was fortunate to have an understanding consultant who let me me delay in total for a year while I thought about it. My leg had become bent inwards because of the knee. After many discussions with family and comments like..it will only get worse and it's not if but when..i bit the bullet. I am 61 and 6 months post op..i still have some swelling and stiffness which can last for many months but each day is better..i don't have pain on my operated leg. But as my other knee also needs replacing and is painful it's a good reminder why I had it done for the other knee. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi As you said, only you can make the decision and everyone on this forum has had a variety of experiences. I had my knee op four weeks ago and am now walking well without my crutches. The op itself was very straightforward and I wish I hadn't wasted time worrying about it beforehand. The physio is tough, but Cocodamol a while before helps. The post op pain, for me, was no more than discomfort, and far less than my pre op pain.

I am only 54 and I am so glad I didn't wait too long to get it done, really looking forward to a better quality of life.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.
