Arthritis big toe joint

Has anyone had the operation for this where they break the toe and put a wire through,i am waiting to see a surgeon about it and my gp said it was a big operation so i am a bit worried as a 74 year old.

    Why do you need the operation?  Does the wire stay in forever or is it removed after the toe heals?  The main concern I'd have about any surgery at any age is the rate of post-op infection seems to be fairly high these days so I'd want to make sure your post-op care is going to be top notch.

      Very painful and stops me walking now..Not sure about the wire but will ask a lot of questions when i see the surgeon..
