AT THE AGE OF 58, AFTER MANY YEARS OF CYCLING AND WEIGHTS AND CANOEING, AND BEING VERY FIT, I WAS FINALLY DIAGNOSED (AFTER 8 MONTHS) AS HAVING PAF, WHICH CAME AS A COMPLETE SHOCK TO ME!

AFTER ALL THE TESTS, I WAS PUT ON A BETA BLOCKER (SOTALOL) AND WARFARIN, AND WITHIN A WEEK I WAS EXPERIENCING NO SYMPTONS AT ALL.

HOWEVER, AFTER A FEW MONTHS MY JOINTS BEGAN TO ACHE(HURT!!) HORRIBLY, LIKE THEY WERE ON FIRE, SO I (ON MY OWN JUDGEMENT) HAVE COME OFF THE WARFARIN, AND THIS SEEMS TO HAVE CURED THE JOINT PAIN. I KNOW THERE ARE RISKS BUT WHAT IS PREFERABLE, THIN BLOOD OR CHRONIC JOINT PAINS?

INCIDENTALLY, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THE MORE SERIOUS IN SPORT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN, THE MORE CHANCE OF DEVELOPING AF!!, BECAUSE THERE IS NO HISTORY OF THIS AT ALL IN SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF MY FAMILY.

ALSO I NOTICE FROM CORRESPONDENCE ON THIS SITE, THAT ONE GUY USED EXERCISE AS A MEANS OF REDUCING THE AF, BUT MOST CERTAINLY THIS WOULD NEVER HAVE WORKED FOR ME AS I FELT REALLY BAD WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING.

CHEERS

Interesting, I am 57 and also have been quite fit throughout my life; active but not a sportsman. However, last year i decided to do more cycling to improve my fitness. After 12 months of take the bike not the car I arrived home on my bike after work and suffered some chest pain which resulted in an ambulance call out. They checked me out in hospital and said it was musculoskeletal - muscle and bone I suppose. However, they also identified AF. That was back in September 06. I have had two cardio-versions, neither of which has cured the problem for more than 8 weeks. I am taking warfarin to stop the clots forming and Bisoprolol to slow the rate down. The combination of inefficient pumping and beta-blocker saps the energy or is that because I am approaching 60! So what causes it and what can we do to keep it at bay? I am a teacher in a University which is surprisingly stressful - giving lectures to 100 teenagers. Should I look for a job in the local garden centre and get some exercise instead of adrenalin? :?

should you keep taking warfarin as you may get clots that will lead to a stroke? :?:

My husband has this week also been diagnosed with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrilation. He is 57 and has been exceptionally fit and still keeps a good level of fitness. In hospital he was initially put on a beta blocker and warfarin. However the Cardiac Consultant said that as he had a very healthy lifestyle (good exercise, food, non smoker and minimal alcohol) and didn't have a pre-existing condition that his risk of clots was minimal and the Cardiologist took him off the warfarin. If this describes you then chat to your Docotor.

I would however caution anyone not to take themself off warfarin but to discuss it with your GP or Cardiologist as I would rather have joint pain that a stroke or other condition due to blood clots.
