Atypical Odontalgia

Hi guys,
For the past two months I've suffered with pain which seemed to stem from a crown I had previously had a crown and two root canals on. I also had a strange dull sensastion across my jaw and cheek, sometimes turning into tingling. After 5 dentists, and seemingly no explanation why I was having the pain, my current (excellent) dentist now strongly believes it's a form of neuralgia. I had the offending tooth taken out so the tooth pain has gone but I'm still left with the sensation across my cheek and jaw, which sometimes also manifests itself as slight sensitivity in surrounding teeth. I don't have the sharp, shooting pain associated with TN however. It's more a constant dull ache.
Any others out there in the same boat with me and can share advice etc.? I'm a Brit currently living in Tanzania, so not a lot of specialists out here!
Cheers,
Adam

Hello, imipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (like amitriptyline). Amitriptyline did not work for me and the side effects were horrendous, so I researched and found that imipramine had less side effects, so asked to go on that and after some adjustments of the dosage, I was pain free. Note that I did have some breakthrough pain, but that only happened maybe 1 day every other month (and the breakthough pain wasn't horrible). Also, there was only one generic of imipramine that worked for me (Par 54) and whenever my pharmacy switched me to a different generic, it didn't work as well. So I had to have my doctor write "Par 54" in my prescriptions.

I wanted to ask if anyone who has atypical odontalgia if you have felt tapping pain in a root canal tooth months later? Pain when you bite down on it that hits up high in the tip of the tooth in the jaw area? Also a feeling of sinus pain when you do this?Dental pain specialist says it's nerves. I would go on nerve meds but I would hate to do that if it's a dental problem, and I would hate to ultimately pull the tooth if it's a nerve problem. I am health conscious and prefer to stay away from unnecessary medication if possible.

Hi I have AO. I've had it a year, both top teeth and bottom teeth at the front
I'm on 25mg Nortripyline but doesn't help with it. I have been passed back and forth to dentists, doctors, specialists and they have all been baffled. So relieved to find this thread. Don't know who to speak to next. No one really understands that I've spoken to. It's constant, only sleep gives me resbite
Thanks
