Atypical Odontalgia diagnosis

Hi,

I know this area hasn't been accessed for sometime, but am stuck on what to do.

Six months ago I had facial issues (numbness below nostril, Sinusitis (type) issues on using sensitive tooth paste specifically on UL1/UL2 or rather in between (i.e the gap), It would radiate up and last for days and also give massive pain in the gap (like 10/10) all the way into the jaw.

The only thing of note is I had a read premolar removed a few weeks before it started (which may not be related)

Since then I have seen multiple people, the first recommendation was root canal, which was performed, but the issue remained. Then I was advised to have it re root canal which was done. Same issue.

I then had an adjacent tooth root canal, Same issue.

I have seen all dental specialists privately (Endodontal,Peridontal etc), and they can offer no solution. Xrays, CBCT scans show nothing apparently. I have been on so many antibiotics but nothing has helped. and the teeth will not settle that were root canaled.

How did anyone on this forum manage to get a diagnosis?. My GP as its dental related cant seem to offer much currently, and most other "dental" people are baffled. Its got to the stage where I am going to have teeth removed.

Did you push for a referral via your GP to someone?, I just don't know who I need to see.

I am not saying I have Atypical Odontalgia but have no idea how to progress my issue.

I now have other teeth giving pain that have not been touched, at my wits end.

I am UK based, so NHS?.

    Sorry, getting desperate now.

I cannot find anyone who can help me diagnose or even suggest a route to go down. Even my GP does not want to know as its dental and can only suggest Anti-D's.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Going a bit barmy (well a lot).

Hi Peter i dont have any answers but having some similar symptoms mine started with pain radiating up the side of my left nostril i had my front tooth extracted and a cyst above it in the gum removed 9 weeks ago the pain is now 10 times worse omg i regret having all that done but i was in so much pain even my dentist could not see anything wrong with the tooth but i found an oral surgeon who did take it

now the pain is either on the left side of nostril and in gum area with numbness under nostril or it will switch sides and be on the right same symptoms

im in so much pain and i went back to the oral surgeon who did nothing and wants to do more root canals to adjacent teeth i really will avoid this as his first attempt made me worse i dont think you should have teeth removed unless they are severely decayed the pain just moves to a new spot

i called to make an appointment today with my gp to try and get a referral to s neurologist as i think they treat the pain differently from a nerve condition angle instead of a dentistry angle but they told me i gave to wait 2 weeks to be seen i dont know i can tolerate this pain one more day

We have the same issue ans Im so thankful to find this Forum and your post

I had a # 15 molar Apico procedure and then a tooth extraction in May of 2020 and my issues went down hill from there .

      • had to have sinus surgury
      • multiple oral and Gum procedures
      • multiple root canals on tooth 14
      • pain moved to tooth 13 now
      • ear ache pains and had to have tubes inserted to elevate ear pressure

Finally after seeing several ENT Doctors and then Neurologist i was diagnosed with Atypical Facial Pain and my symptom's point to Atypical Odongia

i was prescribed 4O millagrams of Nortriptylene and also Pregalum also know as Lyrica

i wanted to add i think you should try asking for a referral to a neurologist ive been researching online and i think they are best equipped to treat trigeminal nerve conditions or damage the medications and treatments and testing is just different than the endless root canals and extractions
