    Hi Sue,

AUD stands for Alcohol Use Disorder.

It is now the standard way that medical organisations now refer to what used to be called alcoholism.

It is intended to cover the entire spectrum - from those in the early stages of problem drinking, to those in the latter stages - and the change will hopefully enable people to ask for help sooner without feeling the stigma and fear of being labelled an 'alcoholic'.

The word ALCOHOLIC, to a lot of people without alcohol problems, very sterotypicic. The see it as tramp sitting on a park bench sifting through rubbish bins whilst clutching a bottle of meths or cheap cider.

They don't for example, see a middle aged housewife in an affluent area having a gin and tonic first thing in the morning. It is far easier to explain that you suffer with AUD, and like Joanna says, encourages more people to seek help, rather than admit they're an alcoholic. They suffer in silence, as they feel ashamed to admit to being labelled an alcoholic.

Yes, the word alcoholic conjures up a very poor image. A loser, someone that is at rock bottom. When many people hold down good jobs, juggling a family and all other aspects of life, but insted of taking say, anti-depressants they take alcohol.

You wouldn't call someone who became addicted to Valium (mother's little helper) a druggie, so why do people think that anyone with an alcohol issue is a wino. It is this stigma that has held the whole industry back for so many decades.

If the government just used a small proportion of the tax take on alcohol, to fund helping people, it could be dealt with so much more easily. It needs either to fund GPs to deal with it or get proper ARCs that have professional staff that actually have knowledge of the subject, the psychology and the medications on offer.

You have a real skill in creative writing. You've posted exactly what I wanted to say, but in a far better way, so thanks an excellent post

I was the same Sue had to look it up, knew it was Alcohol something. Googled and got what others have replied with LOL x Now I have a video to watch about it from another posting I am on, the lady who obtained it has kindly shared the link with me and the person who actually gave it to her has posted now so saved his name too in my little email folder. Gonna watch it later! x

It also explains why some people just find it so hard to change their drinking behaviour. They are not weak or helpless or pathetic. It's a disorder - a medical disorder. Where all the normal rules of motivation, trying, wanting, intending, prioritorising, simply don't apply.

That's so true. It's not just a question of being week and pathetic and lacking motivation skills, it's an illness. After watching the video, my family understood me a lot easier

Oh I'm so pleased they are understanding you better. I struggled so hard with motivation. Beating myself up because my motivation to drink was stronger than my motivation not to drink, even though that wasn't how I wanted it to be. Best wishes to you.

I expected the word "misuse" to be there, as in "AMD".  That seems to make more sense? rolleyes
