Audiometey test , what to expect?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi everyone ,

I’ve been to my ENT a couple of weeks ago for a throat infection  (I see him for allergy problems as well) anyway , I’ve been constantly feeling like there is fluid moving in my ears (specially the left one ) . It’s been happening way before the infection so he did a test of the middle ear (I forgot the name) but it measures the pressure and acoustic reflex .

The results showed that my pressure was within the normal range but slightly down *i have no idea how to post a pic* .

But what was shocking is that the acoustic reflexes in my right ear were bad even tho all my problems were in my left one . He repeated the test and the same results showed . He said it’s irrelevent and might be an old issue So he decided to send me to an audiologist whom I’m going to see in a couple of weeks .

Did anyone went through the same ? Is it something that I should be worried about ? And what should o expect in my appointment?

Thanks in advance .

No need to one at all.  I've been all through these tests myself.

I was told after the test that I was missing the low pith sounds,

but did well on the high ones.

If you're suffering from blocked ears, hearing will o course be

reduced. Fluid actually can't been seen, as it's ar the back

of the eardrum, however, I think they go on the colour of

    our eardrums to determine.

Bth of y ears are really blocked today and that gives rise

to headaches and neck ache too.  I've used my naules

both yesterday and today, so hopefully by tomorrow I'll

    be ok again.

I've been spoilt lately as they haven't been laying up.

I'm putting it own to having stayed indoors for a

complete week, with no fresh air due to the heavy

snow fall we've experienced in England.  Happy to

say today it's thawing fast....being shut in makes

my allergies worse and in turn blocks up my ears.

ETD is such a crappy condition to suffer and I

feel for all those on the Forum that are still

suffering with no break....at least I'm getting

4/5 days relief before they block up again

after using the Nasule drops......these also

help with post nasal drip and rhinitis too.

I'm trying so hard not to take my antihistamine

every day, as I'm wondering if they are the

reason why my hair is thinning so badly.

Every morning I see more strands on my

black pillow case and now getting paranoid.

Probably nothing to do with the Cetrizine.

Having a blood test taken soon to see what

could potentially be causing my thinning hair.

If it's not one thing it's another !!

I should read my messages before I press send.  Sorry that should read No need to worry at all.

I was confused by the “you don’t need one “ lol but then I read your reply .

Anyway , my doctor determined that I have a little fluid due to the pressure test . It’s like I said within the normal range but it should be higher *i still haven’t figured out how to post a pic*

And to clear things up , I’m not worried by the actual test , but I’m a bit worried about the hearing loss -no matter how little it is - I’m only 20 and these things worry me indeed !

I too don’t use my antihistamines a lot . Only when my allergies are so bad . I’ve always used them and steroids when I was a kid (I have eczema also) they were the only things that actually worked ,however , I’ve got pretty bad side effects and I don’t want to go through that again.

Oh and I don’t believe that the antihistamines caused my side effects , but they always tend to make me sleepy. The cortisone however caused me  other health problems .

      Hello Anne

You sent a message to me on another discussion site and it is on my list to reply but I want to send a private message and have to find out how to do so.  About the hair loss - I have it too.  It has been thinning for some years but it took a while before it was thin enough for me to notice.  I did some research.  Apparently there are different menopause types with regard to levels of hormones present in the system after menopause and if you are unlucky you get one of the types that result in hair loss.  I also have an autoimmune disease and various other health issues and wonder if the stress/distress/anxiety/depression caused by these and life in general does not also play a part.  I hated it at first - made me feel older than my years.  Now the rest of my feels just as old!  Do let me know if the blood tests reveal anything; no one has ever been interested enough to look into a cause for mine.  I hope it is not something else for you to worry about.

      Best wishes as always, Maureen

      Morning Maureen,

I'm not sure how to work my laptop to enable Private Messaging.

I reply to people on the Forum if they send privately to me.

I don't mind replying on here and sometimes what we write may

be picked up by other women that are in the same position, so

      maybe helpful to them too.

Nothing I type is that private that I don't want people to read.

Shame you can't work out face book, we could certainly speak

      privately on there.

I don't think for one moment that the blood test is going to show

anything up regarding my hair, I think you are spot on when you

mentioned menopause and I think it's that absolutely.

I've been chatting with Linda from China on the Forum, she too

has autoimmune disease, which of course you've said can

potentially cause hair loss.  I haven't got bald patches, thank

goodness, just badly thinning.  When it gets bad that I can no

longer cope with it, there is a lady in London who mkaes

bespoke wigs, I will pay her a visit.  However, it will cost at

least £2,000, which is a lot for vanity ha ha !!

I'll have to check out what you researched about different

hormone levels that cause hair loss.  The main problem

that I'm aware of it thyroid problems and iron deficiency.

I'm sure these won't show in being abnormal in my blood

test.  I must keep an eye on my Cholesterol though, as

my HDL is too low, so will have to improve that, but LDL

is low, so that's a bonus.

All these health issues are quite complicated and years

ago when younger didn't worry, but as we age it's good

to make sure our Blood Pressure, Glucose levels and

Cholesterol are all working fine.  I must get my bot. into

gear when the summer arrives and start walking again,

another good way to keep cholesterol in check....hate

exercise !!  However, if we don't look after ourselves,

no one else will.  Having suffered the Bacterial Meningits

through the blessed Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, I never

want to experience that ever again.

I have a friend who is a qualified Nutritionist, so I get so

much information from her regarding the best types of

foods to eat and what supplements I should be taking for

my age.  Also what supplements compliment each other,

or don't.  I've just found out from her that if I take Vit D3,

I should also be taking Vit K2 and along side that Magnesium,

but the magnesium has to have certain things in it and not

others....I told you it was complicated !!  It's whether we can

all be bothered to research problems that we suffer and do

      something about it.

My lovely daughter has just bought me Himalayan Salt Lamp.

Supposed to help with allergies, anxiety etc etc.  I'll try anything

that's helps with my issues.  I've in the past paid a lot of money

on machines that supposed to eradicate dust and pollen....can't

notice any difference.  I've also had Accupunture, no change.

I guess ETD is something I've just got to learn to live with and

after all the years I've suffered you'd think I have, but I haven't,

it's one of the most miserable things to suffer from.  I'm so

thankful I have such a good ENT consultant that's looked after

me so well ever since the illness.  I just wish I didn't have to

take steroid nasal drops for the rest of my life to help eleviate

the misery.  All settled back down again now, but had a nasty

episode over the weekend.  Because I'm trying to only use the

Nasules when ears blocked, when they do, they're bad.  I should

keep on top of it and maybe use them every 3 days instead of 6.

Also trying not to take the Cetrizine antihistamine every day.  They

make me sleepy too, but because I take mine late afternoon I

usually get a very good nights sleep....something else we suffer

as we age, insomnia !!  I shouldn't moan, as there are so many

people out there so much worse off than myself.

Take care Maureen and so happy you've messaged me again.

I'll let you know my blood test results when I get them, but not

holding me breath that it will show anything up that may help

      me.

      Kindest of regards

      Anne

Can't re-read what I've typed, too long, so hope I haven't made any mistakes.

    Hello OSG

I'm sorry I can't help you but I have sent a message to Anne below and thought it rather rude to ignore you as you started off this discussion.  I had to look up acoustic reflexes; I was not familiar with the expression although I have read a lot about those muscles, even had an audiologist tell me I was tightening one in the area and this was causing my problem.  She was wrong but then she didn't do the correct test to identify my problem (which is quite different to yours).  Question the audiologist when you see her/him.  Ask about the tests they are doing and their interpretation of the results.  Try not to worry ahead of time - it is probably nothing to worry about.  I would be interested to know the results of your audiologist appointment.

    Best wishes, Maureen

      Hi Maureen ,

I’ve just saw this . Thanks for replying (you didn’t even have too smile

My appointment is next week (on Monday) I’ve tried to forget about it and that seemed to make me less worried and for the time to pass quicker.

Anyway , I’ll post the results here and maybe after I go back to my ENT and see what he thinks.

      Have a nice day !
