Aura migraine & menopause

Posted , 3 users are following.

my aura migraines have started coming back after about 45 years. i had them as a teenager & out of the blue im getting them very frequently . ive become very anxious about them. Im 57 years old and i think it maybe the menopause. im now taking propronolol for them. Does anyone know of a good supplement that might help with migraine & menopause, as i get hot flushes & sweats. Im not on hrt. There are so many different things out there you can buy it becomes overwelming and i don't know where to start. Has anyone tried anything that has helped?

    Hello louise87148,

I used to get them about 1 every 12 months if that but now I am getting them every day even few times a day. I am out of my mind with worry thinking it is a brain tumour or something serious. Today I have had 3 and my left eye and face felt very strange for a while which i am concerned about. Few months ago I got double vision so you can imagine how worried I am. I am going to go back the doctors and I do want them to send me to specialist but it's so hard to be referred to one. Not sure where abouts you live and if it's the same there. I am 45 so won't think it's menopause but I have heard you can get them in perimenopause but not even sure that I am in perimenopause.

I would love any advice and help regarding this as I am out my mind with worry.

Thanks for replying to me. I greatly appreciate it. I live in Thetford in Norfolk and every time I go ti the Doctors I just get given more pills. I wish they would refer me to have an mri but they won't. you could be starting the perimenopause as your about the age to have symptoms. GO back to your Doctor & ask for further investigations. I dont work at the moment but I sometimes feel like i will go private & have an mri. Please let me know how you get on. Keep in touch .x

    Hi Louise,

I started getting worse migraine auras from the age of 46 onwards as I went into perimenopause.

It got so bad that I went to the doctor for medical help, unfortunately one propranolol tablet caused a panic attack and Pizotifen looked as if it would help then caused half of my head to go numb three weeks in!

At the age of 49 I'm now in menopause not having had a period for 6 months and the auras reduced.

Starting menopause also started terrible head sweats, literally dripping. Also the usual hot flushes. I started taking Red Clover Isoflavones and after a few months realised I wasn't getting the sweats anymore and the flushes had reduced. Also the auras are far less but have no idea if this would have happened anyway. Not sure if this will help as everyone reacts differently but might be worth a try.

    Hello Anne,

maybe I am in perimenopause now as I am 45 and the auras are really bad and daily. When yours were at their worst how often would you say you were getting them?

Not liking the sound of the medication you got given think I would rather have the aura than my head go numb, glad to hear yours have become less frequent. Not heard of Red Clover Isoflavones is that herbal and where is that from I am in the UK.

At their worst I was getting 13 to 15 a month, sometimes left and right auras on the same day and occasionally one aura following on from another straight away.

I think I had a weird over-sensitive reaction to the propranolol, I felt anxious within 20 minutes of taking it but I know it works well for others. Ditto pizotifen.

I'm in the UK too, got my red clover isoflavones from Boots as they do that 3 for 2 thing on all vitamins and supplements.

    Hello Anne,

Thanks for replying that's how mine are hopefully I am in perimenopause and that's why I am getting them so frequently. I am hoping they will ease off but I don't think they will. I will keep a note of the Red Clover Isoflavones that you mention it's sounds like they have helped a lot with menopause.

    Thanks again!!!!

    Hello Louise,

how often are you getting them as Anne mentions in this thread that she was getting around 13 a month at the worst which is like me at the minute. She mentions Red Clover Isoflavones from boots that have helped with menopause. I am definitely not in menopause at the minute I am hoping I am in perimenopause and that why these auras are so frequent. I have got a doctor's appointment this month so I am going to try and push for further investigations as you mention.

    Take care!!!!
