Awaiting number 2

I am feeeling a bit down at the moment. I had an RTHR in November and felt better afterwards than I had for a long time, since then things have gone steadily downhill as the left side has deteriorated and I am now in even more pain than I was before the replacement.. I am waiting for a second hip replacement in a few weeks time.

I am having it done by the same consultant but at a different hospital.

Is the recovery from the second replacement any different to the first?

so sorry to hear how you are feeling - I can't comment on how you recover having a second 1 as I have only had just the 1 hip replaced but I do hope you do recover quicker - take care and good luck xx

    Hi Dennis,

I am behind you by a few months ... hoping for my RTHR in August and feeling it deteriorate more each day. However, I am still buoyed by the improvement in my first hip. I can well understand the letdown as you wait to rid yourself of the pain and assume a more normal life gain.

I think that it must be time to spoil yourself in some meaningful way and hopefully distract yourself from all of this pain. Any chance of getting away for a few days, attending a favourite performance or going to a spa to unwind and be pampered?!

This is such a draining process ... tests all our limits of tolerance and pain with too few of the joys of life.

Wishing you another smooth operation and recovery.

    From a Cdn hippie.

    Hi Dennis

    ive had both

R hip resurfacing 8 years ago - took about a year to get better but the awful pain i was in was gone

was ok for a few years then L hip started playing up - left that for two years longer than i should have done due to being made redundant / finding new job etc

L hip done 2 years ago - - by the end of 2014 was being to feel I was back to normal - fell over on wet decking and tore achilles tendon - meant I had to wear a big boot for months - caused R hip to start playing up , and co incidentally they were all recalled at same time due to being metal on metal - to cut a long story short turned out R femur was fractured where prothesis screwed in which explained pain - put oon urgent list for revision RTHR

recovery from each op has been roughly the same - 6 weeks of restrictions which make life hellish, then you feel you are getting there , then it all feels too sliw then a year later you feel back to normal - havent noticed anything significantly different each time

been in pain more or less with everything for the last two years so I would say a big fat yes to going for your second - dont leave it too long like i did - just get through it and you will recover . You,ll have the benefit of any coping tricks you,ve learnt with the first and it will all be over . Its a miserable business , but you,ve not really been able to feel the benefit of the first op yet - you,ll get there and life will be better xxx

    In a word .... sometimes.

I had two recoveries, 10 weeks apart, and they were different in some ways.

    pain was about the same

I had to have a catheter thesecond time, not the first.

I was up the stairs (and out of hospital) much quicker the second time

I could only lay on one side the first time, but the opposite side the second time.

Was given spare TEDs second time, not the first time.

Initial recovery was quicker the second time

I found my stamina was much less the second time so couldn't walk so far.

Everyone is different, and every recover can be different too.

Seemy blogs on my two recoveries on my website - the address is in my personal information at https://patient.info/forums/profiles/rocketman-sg6uk-907025
