Awful attack

Hi.

My mother has been ill for 5 days....sickness, spinning, dizziness and had the doctor visit. She's unable to get out of bed, even watching tv and reading are too difficult. Moving her head sets of the symptoms. I'd just like to know how long the Minieres symptoms will last, as I I thought they only lasted a few days maximum.

Thanks in advance

David.

    Hi David

Aw, your poor mum. Unfortunately the symptoms can last for days or weeks. If it's going on so long I would suggest GP and an urgent ENT referral to look at her treatment. Hope she gets better soon.

The after effects from meniere's can last for a week or two. All the symptoms you mentioned I get. The best thing is to rest, not to force herself to 'battle it out'. That only made mine and my mom's symptoms last longer. Ive found it best to go with it and complete rest till it starts to clear up. Hope that helped.

Acute Meniere's attacks last less than 24 hours although you feel rotten for several days after. Virus infections of the inner ear are known to cause what you describe so it is vital to get an accurate diagnosis.  If attacks continue she will need ENT referral and probably an MRI scan.

You may find it helpful to look at the Meniere's Society web site.

    Best of luck.

    David,

I'm sure it is painful to watch your mom suffer. My family feels my pain. One thing to watch out for is dehydration if she vomits a long time. She may need an IV hookup to replenish fluids. I usually vomit for about 7 to 8 hours. Followed immediately by continuous tiny sips of water till i can drink normally

Thanks Cathy. She's a little better today, and drinking plenty of fluids.
