Awful side effects from cystoscopy

Posted , 9 users are following.

I had a cystoscopy 10 years ago and it had to be done with general anaesthesia because otherwise I couldn't tolerate the pain. Since the cystoscopy I've had regular pain in my penis and prostate. And painful ejaculation and/or pain after ejaculation. It's had a significant impact on my mental health because I feel like my sexuality has been ruined. It must be that the prostate was damaged by the cystoscopy, but I can't seem to find anything about this online, and urologists can't give an explanation. Has anyone had similar experiences or any ideas about this? Thanks.

For guidance I would suggest you go to a GP that specialises in what it called MEN'S HEALTH.

Such a GP is best equipped and mostly unbiased in recommending treatments.

You are not alone in reporting discomfort. A good friend has a bladder problem and underwent a couple of cystoscopies, BOTH with great discomfort as a result.

Was it a rigid or flexible cystoscopy?

I had a rigid one done years ago and it did give me pain and discomfort for over a year afterwards. As I was young then, I recovered but no explanation as to what it was that caused it.

Later in life now and I have had 3 flexible cystoscopies with no problems though had Urolift which has again left me in constant pain; 3 years and counting 😦

I've had so many cystoscopies in the last 4 years I've lost count but it's at least a dozen. Never had any pain during beyond a slight discomfort and nothing afterwards beyond burning the first couple of urinations afterwards. I guess I'm a lucky one.

      You are very lucky.

Your urologist clearly knew/knows what he's doing.

I've only had 1 cystoscopy it hurt when he want through the prostate area. I had discomfort for 6 months after the procedure. I'm pretty sure I got prostatitis from it. No uro would even entertain treating me for prostatitis. I ended up faking a urinary tract infection to get antibiotics then convince my PA to give me 2 more weeks of antibiotics. Cured my prostatitis. I will not have another cystoscopy unless it is totally needed.

My last cystoscopy 3 weeks ago, went fine. What did hurt was when he grabbed a catheter and attempted to empty my bladder. He could not get the catheter through. He pushed , moved my penis around, pulled , pushed some more, but finally stopped when he saw me wincing and in pain, and he wasn't' getting anywhere.

I seem ok, but that was pretty unpleasant ....

I've had one cystoscopy and have vowed never to have another if I have any choice about it. Intense stinging and sharp pain during urination lasted for around eight weeks after the procedure. I really feel for you.

      HI

I had a bladder neck incision 12 days ago, getting pain during urination which last for a while after passing water, however the flow is so much better.

it might be useful if people said if their cystoscopy was flexible camera or rigid camera and it may show one method is better than other. Or if both have (approximately) same chance of problems.

    Just an idea, hopefully helpful.
