Azamun (Azathioprine) Good or bad?

Hello,

I have UC and for the last few months I have been having a bad run of flare ups and now my specialist wants to put on Azathioprine. I currently take Pentasa-messalazine 500mg tables 8 per day and have been on these for the last 13 years with very little trouble from my colitis apart from the odd flare up.

I am not to keen to start taking Azathioprine after reading about some of the nasty side effects and how it lowers your immune system making you more at risk to infections.

Is anyone here current taking it and if so has it worked for you and stopped your flare ups. Also have you had any side effects or health problems from taking it?

Cheers

    Hi,

I was about to be put on immunosuppressants after a bad run of flare ups too earlier in the year, & did not want to go on them for the same reason as you. I asked my ibd nurse specialist if i could try ipocol as my mum has been on this for years of uc with little problems. she hadnt used ipocol with any of her patients but she agreed to try due to mums success with them, & i have been on them since end of may this year. they have made me alot better, but i still suffer with the terrible tiredness, but overall the pain has all but gone, & bowel movements down to about 3 - 4 day & blood/mucus only occasionally now. ipocol is another form of mesalazine but has a different coating & formula & disperses at a slighlty lower ph in the bowel. sometimes(as shown with me) this can be what makes the difference whether a medicine works for some but not for others. i too was on pentasa which didnt control it well. if you try ipocol it is best taken before food with at least a pint of water or 3hrs after with a pint of water ( i have found if taken with food the tablets come "out" in your stool partially intact. it is normal to get bits of the shell of the tablet in stool (i asked the manufacturer - sandoz) but not partially intact tablets with the medicine in, so do take with lots of water as i do. it took about 5/6wks to make a real difference to me. hope this helps. good luck

Sorry,I don't know much about Azathioprine, but I know the consultants usually start with reasonably mild drugs for UC and if these don't control the flares,a stronger med is tried. Good luck x
