Azathioprine linked with cystitis?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Have been on azathioprine for six months and doing okayish  where the colitis is concerned though have a very limited diet.  But my concern is the two bouts of cystitis I have had over the last month and have had to take antibiotics to clear it up because the powders you can buy from the chemist did not work.  Has anyone else suffered from cystitis whilst on aza?  If so, did you have to come off the aza?  Thank you for any advice you can give me.

HI Janet... sorry.. nope.. not from the aza as I've been on it for nearly 6 months though I have had bouts of cystitis in the past that were quite painful. It apparently is bacteria that can get in say if it's from a 'loving encounter' though I have also had it from not drinking enough.  I've not had to take antibiotics for it either as the powder seemed to always work but I do drink cranberry juice now (which is what was advised by the nurse at the GPs (this was before the colitis struck over a year and a half ago and for a whileafter I didn't cuz everything affected me and cystitis struck so I started drinking it again) so I make a point of drinking plenty of fluids and a small glass of cranberry juice. Not being a cranberry lover, it's not actually really well that bad. :-) I get the reduced sugar one from either the well known brand name (if on sale) or Sainsburys as it's not overly cranberry-ry. :-)   Hope this helps even just a little bit.

Hello Fluffe.  I do drink cranberry juice but my doctor thinks that is a myth and it is just the increased fluid that is working.  The aza does make my urine very dark but at least I have got my 6 month blood test this week which will indicate if the kidneys are being affected. xx

Hi Janet... I hope ithe aza hasn't affected your kidneys though it's interesting that one 'school of thought' says cranberry juice is good for it and one says it really isn't!!! (and as you can probably tell, I don't really like the stuff!)  I do try and drink at least 3 litres a day of various liquids though I do notice that when I don't drink alot, the colour changes and it begins to 'hurt' and does have an odor but I was always like that from when I don't know when. :-) - that's usually when I'm out and not sure how far from one toilet to the next I'll be! (How I miss the ap Sit and Squat! (Smile!)

I hope your six month blood work goes well both with the kidneys and of course the colitis! Mine isn't for about another 3 weeks though I've only just come off the pred end of last week and have been able to reduce what seemed like bucket loads of laxido too! I am taking 100mg of aza and so far all is looking ok - fingers crossed - for the both of us.cheesygrin
