I'm waiting for tests at the moment to rule out anything sinister but I'm not sure why it's given me such a bad back ache I'm at a loss to understand the human gut would love some advice

Did either of you get to the bottom of this (excuse the pun) I've had severe IBS symptons for nearly two weeks now (had flare ups previously but not in 2.5 years and never as bad/long) accompinied this time with terrible lower back ache and pain in my left hip, not sure if its just a coincidence or what, seen the GP twice and she has been pretty unhelpful.

Just to let you know that happily my symptons began reducing several weeks ago and now I can say they have almost gone. I have not reached my hospital appointment booked at the beginning yet, so still not sure what it is. The fact I took probiotics, started having porridge for breakfast and drinking more water may be a factor, but knowing it can get better as well as worse is very reassuring and I think it could be IBS and not something more sinister. The discomfort started in Oct spreading and slowly increasing, which was worrying, for about 7 weeks.

There are a couple of potential associations between IBS and Back Pain.
1. Physical Causes
The issues in your back which are creating the pain, may be affecting nerves which innervate your digestive system. For example, by being compressed or 'tweeked' by the back problem.
2. Pyschosomatic Causes
Both Back Pains and IBS can have a strong emotional and mental component to them. Which is why their symptoms often flare up when people are stressed out. This phenomena is explained very clearly in the book The Divided Mind by John E. Sarno.
Best Wishes,
David.
