Back again for advice

So back again for some advice, I can’t help but keep reading everyone’s horror stories about surgery sad and wish I could just say I’ll deal with it, but the affect on my life is depressing.

Suffering with an external (pea sized to almost a small grape ) causes me no discomfort, pain . But also at least one internal grade 3, it’s almost connected to the external) again no pain, nothing. Except blood, sigh last week was good went 8-9 days with normal bowel days. Then while on a work trip, decided to have satay soup ( my fav) then next day 4-5 trios to the bathroom, still no blood, but knew it would come. Get on my flight home, go to the truck, low tire , drive carefully to a gas station. Put air in, and squatting, and fighting with the hose. After I’m done, feeling wet, check and blood all over. So wander in to the bathroom, took 5min to get it stopped, look down see blood on the boxers, beige work pants . Make a run to the truck, got my suit case in there, change clothes, drive home. Wash out the pants and boxers and go to bed. No bowel movement till tonight ( 3 days or so) normal soft stool, with the standard blood, clots on the toilet paper) but again a completely painless.

So I’m learning what foods to avoid, in creased fiber this week, it’s hard, I hate asking th wife to make separate meals for me, so I stick to cereal and high fiber foods on my own.

No the million dollar question, it’s going to take 8 weeks to get in for surgery, doctor recommends surgery, banding is not an option. Normally I’m so proud of Canada’s healthcare system, but we don’t have many options for a 2nd opinion or asking for alternative options. So I still wanna make it through the summer ( praying that I don’t have a “burst” had 3 in the past 2 years, twice on the golf course ( my fav summer activity ) and this past one. But I see all these comments on pain, avoid at all cost, live with it. What to do! Why can’t there be a magic cream to reduce the size of it! Or at least keep it inside damit. If I do surgery I wanna just tell them leave the external alone, but I think there connected! Sigh so confused.

Thanks for listening guys

    Hello Mrbobisto,

I too had a pea sized external and a skin tag removed. My father had the surgery for really large internal ones. Mine as per the doctor was "simple, 15 minutes with 1-2 days". But he was wrong. I have to tell you that the surgery itself was of course not bad. You are under anesthesia, you wake up and still have the effects of the anesthesia and pain killers. When they wear off I had wished that I hadn't made the decisions to have it. I regretted every second on it. I had surgery this Monday. The first bowel movement is terrible, then it DOES get better. I can honestly tell you that today's bm was much easier. Every day I have been wanting to throw in the towel. I haven't cried this much in my life. But I have realized that with this, you have to be very patient because the days feel long, stressful, disheartening, you want to give up, you get depressed thinking it won't get better but it does. If I had read these post I think I would have been a little more prepared mentally.

When I think back on how I was and how that little pea sized hemm was controlling my life and knowing that if I didn't have this surgery then I would have to live with the occasional uncomfortable swelling, irritation then it is a good option. It is, hopefully, 2-3 weeks of uncomfortable, pain but then you are free of this.

I had four internal and two external removed in October.

When I went back for a check up in December the surgeon told me the operation was difficult.

When I came out of surgery I was sick do was kept in over night.

Next morning had a shower and the nurse removed the dressing for me. They started me on my medication. For pain I was given paracetamol and dihydrocodeine. I took the paracetamol but only a couple of the dihydrocodeine as I was not in alot of pain. For stool softener I was given lactulose and fybogel which I took as instructed and drank lots of water. For breakfast I ate bran flakes and added either raspberries or blackberries to them. Eat apples and pears. Had whole grain rice with vegetables. I did look at it and saw the bruising. I went on short walks and built this up. But remember when you are walking to not do to much.

    Just remember everyone is different.

I was not in alot of pain.

I would still have the operation again.

I read what people were saying before my operation and was dreading it. Also I had never been in hospital as a patient ever in my life.

    Hope this helps youl

Mary, I'm so happy that you didn't have that much pain. My fist bm was horrible. How are you doing now? When did you start to feel "normal"?

The first BM I had was painful as you do not know what to expect. They were still sore for a few weeks but gradually got less and less. Some time the BM took ages but after each one I sat in a hot bath to help it. I felt better after a few months.

    How are you doing?

It still amazes me how doctors say 1-2 weeks and you cam resume all normal activity and be well. I don't know who they've been talking to. I have a friend who was at the gym a week after this surgery. Everyone is definitely different.

Thanks everyone, I’m going to try and hold out till October, between having 3 work trips over the next 2 months and summer upcoming. I’ll see if I can make through this years golf season, by drastically changing my diet, and hopefully dropping some weight prior to surgery . Hopefully I can make it through my 2 weekend tournaments with boys ( was lucky last year) it’s so sad that we allow things like this change our entire life
