Back Issues

Ive had a back issue for sometime now, have been told that there are no surgical options as I wouldnt benefit from them.. has the MRI scans and seen 3 different consultants.... Have had injections, physio...even had a tens machine for 3 months...... but have left in pain in the lower back that radiates into my buttoxs and my legs.... Sitting for to long is painful, just the same as standing / walking.... Of course they tell me to loose weight and gie up smoking... which I did and doesnt make a blind bit of difference to the pain I am in....As this has been going on for so long I feel like I have been left out to pasture...and cope with this alone... My GP is brilliant and will issue the painkillers but I question how long should one be on these...what damage long term are these doing........Anyone else been left like this....

I have been in your position for thirty years, and the surgery just made it worse.
I've lived with it for so long I can't imagine a normal life. So take whatever eases your pain, exercise if you can to strengthen your muscles, and try to cope with it as best you can.
Sometimes there just isn't an answer to problems, and hard though it is, we have to live with it.
I have inflammation of my spinal nerves and have to rely on strong drugs.

I hear ya, but I had have all the surgeries injections and still no relief, and now a spinal cord stimulator which has done nothing for me, and it's supposed to take you off some of your meds, I've been like this for 20 years happened when I was in my 20's and now 45 so it's tough you feel like your life is just trying to be pain free and want to enjoy everything in life there is, I don't know why they do what they do to us, but I have said it before we are their(Drs) Guinea pigs to see what's gonna work or what kind of pills, it's tough being in pain day in and day out, stay strong and hopefully one day they will listen to you and do something.
We are all hear to listen and vent, I just smile each day even though I am in pain I am still hear, so I smile.
Hang in there you will find people who will become friends and help you go through your pain.
Your friend cynthia ( Cindy)

You can increase the pregabalin significantly if you can tolerate it as well as the oxycodine.
I'm guessing you're in the UK with the names of your meds.
Have you tried MST, Carbamazepine, Amitriptyline, gabapentine, diazepam??
I've just had a double lumbar fusion of S1-L4 and it's been a success so far. I'm still on 240mg Dihydracodiene, 100mg Amitriptyline, 600mg Carbamazepine, 5mg diazepam, 2000mg paracetamol and 150mg diclofenac. I am relatively comfortable for the first time in 10 years. I hope it continues.
Have you been to the Pain Clinic??
You are right, it's hit or miss. I couldn't take pregabalin or gabapentine as it made me very ill. But can take all the above without being tired or sick. It's about finding your cocktail and sticking with it.
Is it all neurosurgeons you have scene? Try a Ortho if you haven't. I've found they are better. Others will tell you the opposite but it's about finding out what's right for you.
Good luck

Meds theyve tried me on work to a point of reducing the pain but its never gone... issue I had was to many side effects
The way got around this is take meds before ie two Pregablin, two Amitriptyline..& two normal pain killers, once in a comfortable position in bed wouldnt move for dust.. complete knock out,,,,,, then I'd get up in the morning and suffer the pain whilst on the school run and then when back at home take half my meds..at least then I had a 5 hour window before having to pick the kids up.... most of that was in bed sleeping...

Like you I take most of my meds from 6pm on wards. During the day I take Dihydracodiene, diclofenac and paracetamol. Not the others. However, the others don't affect me during the day either. I take Amitriptyline, Diazepam and Carbamazepine around 9pm and I get a restful nights sleep. That's a positive compared to previous when I didn't sleep. Having just had my operation I'm not driving anyway. Will be another 2 weeks or so before I can do that. Wound on the stomach is still swollen and tender!
Anyway, time to go do some more rehab.

It's unbelievable what they put you on in pain, I'm in the US and they have me on pill form of methadone 60 mg a day than oxycontin 15 mg 4 x a day for break through pain plus valium 10mg 3x a day zanaflex 4mg at night with my frova I took everything under the sun u name it I was on it, so the methadone that they give liquid form to addicts it so sad that every time you go to the hospital they think you are a junkie I'm like read the chart before you assume. I hate taking all this stuff and still in pain, and have a Nevro stimulator and let's see if it works.
I hope you can have some pain free days
