Have moved to another country town, have purchased a brand new Laptop. This town is called Nanango and is still in Qld. It  has much better internet reception so I will be able to follow the forum like I used to. PMR for 5 years now. Seem to have quite a few flares which is really frustrating as you all know. Question do others feel that their thigh muscles have weakened since being on Pred? If so are you doing anything to help this. Cheers to you all. Kath.

    Kath,

I lost strength and flexibility in my hams since PMR in June last year. It was the area below my butt, where the symptoms also started first and I still feel it when getting up or do too much exercises (Pilates, Running, walking, Yoga). You have to find out, how much you can do and each day can be different. When I do too much, I am sore. Good luck!

Yes, getting up and down seems to be where I feel it most. Might try walking and I have an exercise bike which has hardly been used. It's a wonder the wheels haven't rusted tight. Cheers.

Weakened thigh muscles... Oh, yes!. But good news is that four years after getting to zero pred. and although I'm  twenty one years older than when I had PMR for the first time, I reckon my leg muscles are pretty good.  I have given up ladders but that's all.

It didn't happen overnight and I would guess it kept on improving for at least eighteen months.

Good luck in your new home.

That should have been eighteen years older! Muscles ok; calculation skills seem to have taken a hit.

Dear Betty, It is encouraging to read that you are improving. I am on 13.5mgms of Pred at present. Got down to 8mgms  but had a major flare and had to go up to 15 mgms and am now tapering down slowly again .Weight is an issue but I guess the rocky road ice cream I have just eaten is not good for me but boy did I enjoy it.!!!!!. Cheers

Welcome back Kath - enjoy your new town.

I don't know how old you are, but aching muscles can be PMR or 'old age' (?)  Everyone on here will say 'excercise, excercise' but take it easy.

Hi Constance, I am 65 years young. I am going to try walking to see if that helps. I can't do a lot of exercise because of lung probs but I don't want to give in to this rubbish. Thanks for replying. How are you anyway?

Not doing too badly for a 78 year old (My Goodness I'm nearly EIGHTY!! How did that happen).😀

Loss of muscle tone is common when on pred. The guidelines say patients should be given a tailored physio program to mitigate the effects. Does anyone bother? 99% certainly don't!

I walk and do stairs whenever available and I'm not carrying shopping. After 8 years I can still stand from sitting on normal chairs without using my hands to help

Ooops - and forgot to say it's great to see you back!

Were we pushing the low carb approach to pred-associated weight gain when you were here before? It definitely works for the vast majority of us. I lost 35lbs of PMR and pred weight.

Good Morning or evening not sure which one it is. I vaguely remember talk about low carb diet. Do you recommend any particular sight for a diet regime or is it just a matter of googling low carb diet? As long as it doesn`t involve parsnips I will give it a go. I purchased a soup maker from an op shop today for $12.50 bargain they normally cost $190. If it works I will also try soups. How are you keeping? How is the family? Cheers Kath

Parsnips would be a no anyway - most root veg are high in carbs!!! Especially parsnips - but I still smuggle them in a few times over the winter lol

The websites you find with google give loads of ideas and recipes. It's just a case of finding the ones that suit you. Soups are fantastic if you make them with non-root veg - so filling. I just avoid all processed carbs, rice, pasta and potatoes of any sort,  and eat meat, cheese, eggs and above-ground veg. And the occasional carrot. And loads of salads.

I'm great thanks Kassie - although we are spending our autumn camping holiday rather closer to home than usual at a site near the radiotherapy unit here while OH has 8 weeks r/t for prostate ca. Saves over an hour driving each way and is a beautiful area - high season here for walking! Not that anyone in their right mind would have been walking yesterday and today. After a summer of drought and water concerns it broke this week!!!! Even snow above 1700m so would be able to see it at home.
