Lower back pain? Constipation might be the causeSella ConstipationYou are having back pain and you don’t know what is causing it. You are searching for the possible causes. That’s why you are here. Right?

    [constipation lower back pain]

There are many causes of back pain. It can range from poor posture to advanced cancer. I am not going to tell about all the possible causes.

One of the common causes of back pain is constipation. Yes, chronic constipation can cause lower back pain. There are many reasons for that.

A slipped intervertebral disc is one of the main causes of chronic lower back pain. The intervertebral discs are made up of cartilage. They form cushions between the vertebrae and act as a shock absorber. Too much pressure on the discs can lead to disc prolapse. That is a painful condition.

The pressure on the discs depends on your posture. Lying flat on a firm surface exerts minimum pressure. Standing position causes considerable pressure on the discs. Sitting and bending cause double the pressure as of standing.

Guess what? You have chronic constipation. You spend lots of time in the toilet with a bent seated position. You strain a lot. That scenario creates the maximum pressure on the intervertebral discs. The discs protrude from their original position and irritate the nerves. You get terrible back pain.

Now you want to take medications for the pain. You know that taking Panadol is not going to help. So, you take a stronger one such as Panadeine or Panadeine Forte. You feel better.

The next day, your constipation is worse. You cannot pass even a small piece of hard stool. You bend and strain more. Ouch! It is terrible.

Yes, it is a vicious cycle. Codeine in the pain medications makes constipation worse.

Chronic constipation can cause impacted stools in the rectum. It can cause pressure on pelvic nerves. That is the second reason for your back pain.

Smooth bowel movements can help relieve your back pain.Regular use of a fibre supplement can help you have easy bowel movements. You can also try a laxative or stool softener. If your back pain is not getting better, talk to your docto
