Back pain after bad fall

I fell off my bike pretty bad last weekend. It knocked my breath out, but after I got it back I got up and was pretty much fine for the rest of the day. The next morning my back hurt like hell. Now, almost a week later my back still hurts.

The pain is under my left shoulder blade, the muscles along my spine on the lower back, and on one of the "bumps" (vertebae? I dont know what its called) on the top half of my spine. The pain on my spine feels like a bruise when I push on it, while the muscles are sore and stiff. It hurts sharply around the bruised bump (somewhere behind my lungs) when I land on my feet with some speed (like when jumping/running). This pretty much prevents me from running and going too fast down stairs.

I have full range of motion with my back without too much pain. I am also able to swim with only minor pain. Lifting things like boxes and travel bags is uncomfortable, but hurts only a little. I have not tried to lift heavier weights, because I feel like that may be a bad idea.

Apart from the sharp pain while landing on my feet, it feels like a pretty normal injury. But because of it, I am a little worried: should I just keep doing the activities that dont hurt as much (bike, swim)? Or should I let it rest for a week or so? Any excercises that I can do to help it heal faster? How long can I expect this to last?

Thank you,

Dieter

UGH!!  Print your post off and take it with you into the doctor's office.  Be on the safe side and get this checked out promptly.  Good Luck and God Bless.

If the pain persists in your spine and under your shoulder blade, you should definitely ring your doctor.  A quick X-ray will put your mind at ease. As for the continued exercise, stop doing anything that causes you pain. We have pain receptors in our brain to alert us when something is wrong. Heed those alerts and allow your injuries heal.😉??

I went to the doctor today. He told me that some of my ribs may be bruised. Should avoid physical strain and it should solve itself within a few weeks.
