Back pain and hip arthritis

Hi all, am 43 yrs old having surgery on my left hip on 5th April, I have noticed in the past months or so bad lower back pain and feeling quite stiff.  Has anyone experienced this pre-op? and did it improve after surgery?is this to related to my bad hip and the way I walk (limp) because of the pain?

I suspect its all interretaed. My back was stiff as well but waited until eight weeks after op and went to the physio for getle manipulation and that eased it. Probabably good to speak to the hospital physio when you in for your op.

    Morning

Yes your back  pain could be related to your hip.

I had hip pain and was booked in for a 2nd THR until they decided it was possibly referred pain from my back.   Then the back specialist said it was referred pain from my hip????? Back and forward between the 2 for a while......eventually had my 2nd THR and no the pain in my bck didnt go afterwards. Probably because by that time they had diagnosed kypho scoliosis and arthritis in my lower back.,

So seperate complaints.   With you its probably because you've been compensating for your bad leg, limping etc for a while

We'll see if anyone else has any answers

I had a discetomy 7 years ago and was left with nerve damage to foot. I have always suffered pain in my back. Was diagnosed with osteo arthritis in 2011 in right hip. For the last couple of years my back pain has got worse and so had a T H R three weeks ago.  I was so worried that the back pain would still be there but ...... It has gone. It's amazing. My consultant said the back pain was due to hip and he was right. I suppose when the hip is bad it alters everything, posture, pressure etc. so for me this was the best thing I have done vwish I did it earlier.  Good luck with your surgery. For me, it is life changing x

Read your post with interest Linda. I had a discectomy 10 years ago after the disc burst and crushed the nerve to my right leg and foot, causing pain and numbness. Ive since developed osteoarthritis in my left hip. I had a THR four weeks ago and I'm really suffering with my back! My lumber discs and my S1 are all deteriorated and, as everything realines, I'm terrified of bulging another disc! I'm hoping it will settle down, my surgeon said to expect it as my bad leg was significantly shorter than my good leg and they are now even-which feels great, itz just the back ache. 😞

    Hello flower

I think it quite normal am 4 weeks post op now and I remember before my operation I was always as stiff as a poker all round my hip/leg/and lower back and it was always difficult trying to get comfortable. Once you have had your operation all the pain you had pre op should dissappear .

    good luck with your operation

    all the best

Thank you all for your replies confused,

I have been avoiding seeing the doctor for my back pain, honestly too scared there might be something wrong with it...and its not just lower back pain, kinda start from the neck down to my hip and even my good hip hurts sometimes, let's hope it cools off after the operation...

I have had back pain before the hip started to play up.  I am 2 weeks post op after a total hip replacement and can honestly say that the back is a lot better.  I do have to have the other hip done which should sort all of the pain out altogether, I hope that this helps.
