Back problem , I need urgent help please

Hello , Iam Mariam, 17 and a weightlifter.. about 3 months ago I went to the doctor because I had a knee injury. He told me to do an X-Ray on my back too.. I was suprised as I only felt knee pain and I never had a back pain. The report says that I have a partial straightening of lubar lordosis , Suggestive of mild back muscle spasm and Mild scollotic deformity with convexity to the left side , with maximum peak at L2 level and Disc spaces are preserved.. I love this game very much and I honestly want to complete, but I want to know what would happen to my back if I still insisted to still lift heavy???

    Hi Mariam,

I have a very similar condition to you, however, I'm 43 not 17. I'm presuming your Lordosis, spasms have been caused by the sport you compete in?

What has the consultant said that needs doing?? Operation, Physio?? How much pain are you in?

The reason he has got your back looked at is simply that your knee pain could be a direct result of your back condition. I get a lot of knee/hip pain due to it. I also have no discs left in the whole of my Lumbar Spine. You seem still to have height in your disc space which I take means you still have discs in place.

I'd be asking for an MRI to see what is actually going on as an X-ray will only show bones and not discs, ligaments etc in your back.

Plus always get a second opinion. Keep us posted.

      Hello Scott!

Well The doctor told me It's genetic, I wasn't born with it and it wasn't from lifting weights.. The doctor told me I should stop weightlifting at all, I just love that game and I'm perfect in it , I can't believe that my career would end that easy..I never had back pain from that also. The doctor told me if I didn't stop weitghlifting, In the future , I will have back problems and may have dangerous surgreys too sad

Thank you for you caring , Scott

I was told as 14 year old to stop playing Volleyball, football, badminton, gymnastics and golf. I went on to have a 21 yr career in Volleyball, played for my country and Scottish Uni and got down to a 7 handicap in golf! Granted, I am now facing a third operation but I've had nearly 30 years since that diagnosis. I only finally stopped golf 18 months ago. Go and get a second, third even fourth opinion and a MRI before you stop doing anything. Physical exercise is one of the best preventers of back pain and back conditions.

      Don't give up just yet.

Take the time to heal the problem that is present now...by not lifting for a period of time...a month...using ice packs...and rest....

When you lift...wear the appropriate braces on your waist and knees.

I understand...my son wanted to BOX...and had knee problems from jumping around....but he wouldn't stop and rest....so then there came a point where he COULDNT box at all.

I have a problem that makes me forced to stop weightlifting at all.. I don't have any pain currently in my back , but The doctor says in the future I will have back pain If i still insisted to lift heavy weights, That means I shouldn't lift at all forever to save my self sad

I don't know about that..not lifting forever....if you do physical therapy....and exercise to keep your back strong...and wear braces...you can be ok.

I would get another Drs opinion on that...especially since it is something you LOVE.
