Until 6 weeks ago I walked 5 miles every morning now I can barely walk a 100 yds. Been seeing Pysio as problem with L5 and Piriformis muscle. Dr has now prescribed Amitriptyline tablets do they help as having diffiiculty sleeping. Also had a spinal injury 30yrs ago and spinal deformity in the family.

I'm on 100mg of Amitriptyline a day but it's for nerve pain. It's also a anti-depressant. Depending on what type of pain you have it may or may not work.

Had the problem about 5 years ago. Couldn't walk from my car into a mall. Just couldn't go any further...like all the strength just left my legs...plus the pain from my hip down the leg. Physio, Chiro, pain shots...no joy. Went to a neurosurgeon (not a neurologist) who did the MRI and saw something odd but inconclusive. Did a laminectomy and found a bone spur "crushing" (his word) my sciatic nerve at L4/L5. Got rid of it and shaved back the calcified disk a bit. Instant relief. No rehab. Problem solved.

They should help but they don't suit everyone, only time will tell
