Back running after Plantar Fasciitis?

I have been running for about 4 years. Last year I clocked up 2,000 km and did my third marathon. Unfortunately, I have been suffering from PF since about January. I did all of the classic things - took a course of anti-inflammatories, I wear medical insoles, got an x-ray (not too extreme a case). I obviously took a break from running and eventually my doctor gave me a cortisone injection after the pain didn't subside. It got better for a while and then back again...

6 weeks ago, I finished the last of 3 electric shock therapy treatments. The doctor said I could try running in 2 weeks...but my foot was still too sore. I feel it is improving now (and I only feel it if I put a lot of pressure on it with my thumb). I also role my arch on golf/mobility balls.

I am very keen to at least go out for shorter, slower runs. Does anyone have any experience with this? I think realistically the next step would be an operation that I would like to avoid. Going from running 50 km a week to zero is not very pleasant and hard to replace.
