Back to work soon

I'm worried about going back to work next week. Doctor gave me 3 months off for my left hip replacement. I have been going to physio and gym walking as well, but still not sure I am going to be able to keep up. For the last few days I have been finding myself tiring easily after walks. I will be working in office mornings and doing more strenuous activities in the afternoon... such as stocking shelves which involves climbing ladders. Also will be working cash register which involves a lot of standing in one place. There will be a lot of walking on cement floor as well. Not sure why my energy level has suddenly dropped. Seems strange as I was doing so well.

    Carol,

Have you been climbing step ladders at home to see how you get on, you should not have a problem climbing them also, do you walk a fair distance and stand around see how you feel doing that. If you explain maybe they will give you a stool to sit on.

I have walked fair distance... around 9000 steps. I found myself quite exhausted after that one and had some chest pain so made appt with GP to check if there are problems not connected to hip replacement. A year ago that walk would have been easy for me. As for step ladders, I have been on one around the house a bit. I think I'm just a little nervous about it because my strength on the operated side is still not quite there yet. Thank you for your input. I will try your suggestion standing at home and see how I feel. Also have a few chores that I need step ladder for so I'm going to get a few of them done and see how it goes.

    Hi Carol,

ask your Dr to give you a limited return note.

I went back after 2 months and the first day was a nightmare. It was a 9 hr day, about 8,000 steps. I felt pain and I was uneasy. But don't be over anxious, worried or let your mind run crazy. It was the first day.

The 2nd day was better because I used pain meds and the 3rd day was even better.

Go slow, pace yourself, get that note and keep us posted.

    May God bless your progress.

Thank you. That is very encouraging. I am probably stressing for nothing.

Can you have a phased return, some help and accommodation from managers and colleagues? If you can discuss it with the powers that be and talk to your GP re what is reasonable for you to be expected to do.

I have a laboratory job , in the hospital where I had the op, and had a phased return over 4 weeks and plenty of help from my workmates. I am sure my job is less physical than yours.

    Best of luck

The company I work for is usually pretty good when it comes to limited abilities. Hopefully I can work something out with them

    Hi Carol,

I am a Teacher Assistant, I had the full 3 months off and then went phased return. The first month I did mornings only and then I worked 3 full days and 2 half days, and went back full time 3 weeks before we broke up for the summer. I did feel tired when I went back, as working with the younger ones you do not always get to sit down!!

Ask go for a phase return certificate, if you think you are going to struggle.

    Ann
