Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,
I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.
I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)
I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)
and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)
Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.
I also occasionally get tonsil stones.
I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.
Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.
NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.
I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.
I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.
I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?
Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?
Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

I have the same symtoms as mike666 and many other people on here.
1) mike666 have you had your tonsils or lingual tonsils removed by now? if so has it made a difference? (has anyone had there tonsils or lingual tonsils removed?)
2) As someone said on here, has anyone tried having Flagyl for 3 months with Biaxin or Tetracyclin for 2-3weeks?
3) mike666 have you found a solution? (apart from being 60% cured with metronidazole)
I am going to attempt to get my tonsils removed privatley (uk, very costly), reading this forum I never knew about lingual tonsils might have to try get them removed after, if the normal tonsils dont solve the problem.

I’m in a similar situation as well, I have had halitosis for 8 year. I hope that by sharing information that we might be able to help each other out.
This all started when I was about 19 and was going through a rebellious stage and took to much ecstasy at party one night, and everything changed from then on. I am cautiously optimistic because at times the halitosis has cleared temporarily, so I know that there is a way or a set of circumstances that this can be cleared and hopefully cured.
My breathe can smell of sewerage, faeces, urine, dead animals and farts.
My symptoms are bloating, wind, slow digestion, urgency to urinate, sinusitis, post nasal drip and fatigue.
I have seen several ENT consultants who have concluded that the post nasal drip is a factor in the bad breathe but not the cause. They also have said that the PND is caused by digestive problems.
I have had been tested and cleared of reflux. I have had manometry pressure testing on the lower oesophageal sphincter which was fine.
I had a test to check how effectively I swallow food, 50% of my swallows were poor to nonexistent. Meaning food could be get stuck in oesophagus/throat.
I had a barium swallow to show how effective my digestive transit is, but the consultant was very non committal and vague about the results of this and there was no significant abnormalities, he wasn’t very convincing when he said this though.
I do uses probiotics but they only help the speed up the digestion but don't improve the bad breathe. I think that the problems with my digestive system is causing an over growth of bad bacteria, but without dealing with the underlying cause the bacteria will keep coming back.
I haven’t been convinced by my gastroenterologist at all and need a second opinion.
I’m looking into inflammatory bowel disorder, motility problems, swallowing disorders.
My thoughts are that there has to be something in the stomach/digestive system causing the bloating, the urgency to urinate if I can get these thing sorted I thinks there’s a good chance the halitosis will go as well.
I’m also pretty tired of being told that I should try not to worry about the halitosis by the doctors and that I should just try and live with it! There is no dignity in accepting this quality of life, I need to find a solution.
I don’t know if anyone else has experienced anything similar and has any advice? Would be great to hear from you.
Best wishes.

My stress levels range between moderate and high, but I have taken antidepressents in the past for it and there have been other times when my stress levels are low and it hasn't made much difference.
It may be my stress levels haven't low enough for long enough, maybe ignorance is bliss, but I don;t know, my instinct is that the bad breathe is causing the stress and the stress is not helping the bad breathe. vicious circle, but it could be completely caused by stress and now I can't cure the stress without treating the bad breathe!
There is some interesting reading on the effects cortisol levels on the body on the internet, worth checking out people.
The other thing is that if I exercise for 3 or 4 hours that some clears it, exercise lowers stress levels, but could be circulation related or could be the fact exercise generally improves digestion. Don't know yet but worth noting.
Good luck

Thanks for getting back to me, will definately try the white vinegar.
For me the yellow coating on my tongue is a lot worse when my post nasal drip is bad, there are proteins in the nasal discharge that are great food for the bacteria on your tongue, and if your nose is blocked your more likely to breathe through your mouth which dries it out and again won't help! This seems to be the case for me any way, but it could be caused be number of other things as well. Have you tried things which alter the bacteria in your diestive system? My nasal conditions are often worse when digestions is bad, things like eating nothing but fruit and veg sometimes help, but can be hard to stick to.
Thinking about doing a veg juice detox for a week to see if this improves things.
I have food that I eat different food groups it alters the way my breathe smells. So could be worth a shot.
You've probably tried all this before, but maybe useful for others as well. I'm very grateful for you sharing what has helped you, will definately try it.
Cheers

In my case, my IBS & BB started when I lived in a moldy wo knowing. My odor is similar to yours & changes. I have a tiny hernia & dry tongue, feeling of something stuck in my throat, back of the tongue yellow or white, swollen tonsils, not digesting properly.
I've been eating super healthy since March of this year. It had helped a little, also did a Candida kit cleanse from vitamin shop, now that I'm brushing & gargaling drinking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar when I wake up along w fiber, probiotic, digestive enzymes, water. I am gradually getting better. I'm told fixing digestive issues takes time. I notice the BB comes up when I don't eat on time, and stress. I haven't worked out bc any moving of my stomach causes the odor.
For me the apple cider vinegar works until theses things happen. I agree that it might be more than one health issue connected together & causing this. I follow up w docs to make sure I'm ruling out things to get to the "root" of this.
We may all have different things going on & different bodies but so far. I notice the same symptoms.
I will repost later on his the apple cider vinegar on how it's working & finding something to kill this bacteria causing this. Where is it coming from?

Thanks for getting in touch, really useful to know what's helped you, will give it a go.
Ordered two things amazon last night, one called Gastone and the other call Interfresh, both made by a brand called Healthaid. Supposed to good for dealing internal odors. I have tried similar products in the past, which haven't helped, but anythings worth a shot so going to try them, will let you know how I get on.
One thing which does some times help me is Peppermint Oil, might be worth trying if you haven't already.
Anyway good to hear things are improving for you, if only a little bit. I think it's good to keep trying things and ruling things out, people have and do cure the bad breath, just got to keep on at it.
Cheers.

I spoke w a pharmacists & see did notice my BB. She did point out two over the containerpills for acid reflux.
She mentioned it takes days to work. I was able to schedule my gastro appointment sooner for next week. I am happy about that.
Now I am able to smell my BB & it compares to an odor of dry mouth. When I get the rush to urinate I smell my breath like urine.
I think my stomach might not be closing properly.
please let us know if you found relief?
Thank you,
Chris

I havent been around for quiet some time but i am back.
I recently visited an ENT specialist and told him of my symptoms (like i mentioned before 1.PND 2.Feeling of lump in the throat 3. bad taste in the mouth 3.bad breath) and he told me straight away that i have LPR. He prescribed me 40mg Pantoprazole and to go on a low carb diet. I am on the last week of the first month taking the medication and following the diet and i can truly tell that 1. My mouth feels cleaner 2.The funky acid taste in the mouth has decreased 3.I burp less 4. The 'pain' in the throat has dissapeared 5. The PND is slowly getting better- how do i know?- when i wake up in the morning and brush my tongue the mucous that accumulates on the toothbrush/scraper has decreased, basically when i brush my tongue it nolonger feels as if im just spreading mucous all over the tongue surface. However the BB hasnt dissapeared yet because i still get those nasty noserub reactions from ppl but i strongly feel as though i am close to getting rid of it, Out of all the excitement then dissapointments from coming across possible cures such as adenoidectomy, tonsilectomy, wisdom teeth extraction, DGL licorice, Turbinectomy, Hpylori eradication therapy u name it i've done it, I feel that LPR is the strongest candidate and if we explore it (ppi- double dose for long enough, Linx, proper diet,Fundo etc etc) i believe that those whose BB is caused by LPR will start smiling forever.

Thanks for the heads up.
I've tried Omeprazole and Lansoprazole in the past but neither worked for me, think they are similar from what I've read online. Would be interested to know weather you've tried them and if they had any affect?
How are things going, is the Pantoprazole still working for you?
Cheers

It has been some time I posted. since my last post when I was diagnosed with H.Pylori..I was on Triple therapy at end of which my BB and gastric almost went away, but again surfaced after few weeks..I am now 100% sure my BB is caused my Gastric reflux and H.Pylori..I realised recently that only way to control this thru your diet(as you said Low carb diet) and Taking good probiotics..When I started taking probiotics my symptom seems to reduce and feel better..But the moment I have any heavy ,spicy or oily food my BB symptoms increase..I have tried taking Rabeprazole 20mg every day mrng(empty stomach)..Doesn't help much..So I think the best way is to continue probiotics with Diet restrictions..
You mentioned you are looking at Probiotics from New Zealand. can you give details on that..I would be willing to buy them if it is good..Thanks

In retrospect, I can recall times, as far back as 10yrs ago, when people would fiddle with their noses while talking to me or just offer me gum. Funny how I'm only realising why now.
I've had a history of throat infections since childhood. And yes the tonsils were the culprits. With hindsight I never should have bought so many antibiotics over-the-counter as a school kid. Why did the pharmacists even sell them to me? I grew up an orphan with my grandpa and he had enough to deal with, I dont think the possibility of having them removed ever crossed his mind. Only recently he told me that his father died of cancer of the throat, and this has increased my resolve to get this problem sorted once and for all. I have the works: white-coated tongue, post-nasal drip, tonsil stones coughed up, gastric reflux, lactose and gluten intolerance.
I've tried EVERYTHING from oil pulling to brushing and flossing excessively. I even had a deeply impacted molar surgically removed a few weeks back which resulted in the worst dental experience of my life.
I teach, and have just started working at a new school. I went back to work after 5 days off and I will tell you, I've never smelled death until I opened my mouth that day! So now I have a gaping hole in my mouth thats probably riddled with bacteria, and I put it there.
I live in a part of the world where specialist blood, breath and stool tests are impossible to get. I mean, our country has had 2 presidents die in foreign hospitals (that's a little bit of Geo/Hist h.wrk for you). I gawffed at the price of the oral irrigator but at this point, I'm willing to do anything. Have recently come across probiotics from New Zealand. Getting stuff like that here costs more on shipping than it does to actually buy the products so I'll get a double prescription and begin to eliminate all possible triggers from my diet.
GP's, ENT Specialists, Dentists have been no help, they just tell me to chew gum or drink water or brush and floss. Kind of leaves you walking away and regretting all the money you are wasting on consultation.
My thinking is that a holistic cure will be best. Either Science is ignoring our plight or does not have any answers for us yet (the latter probably resulting in the former). So I'm stocking up on the herbs and hoping for the best. After having come this far, I have nothing left to lose. And if that doesn't work, I'll go on spiritual retreat and take a vow of silence for a year.
This is the first time I'm actually really talking about my problems with anyone, so you can imagine my relief to do so even though I have no answers unfortunately.
