Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi guys!

An update on my condition. I went to the Infectious Disease Doctor and all of the tests he ran on me, were negative. He didn't just run tests for parasites but also to see if there was any infection or swelling in my gut. However, he mentioned that testing for Overgrowth of Bacteria (which I was pisitive for) can be deceiving because the bacteria could be coming from the throat rather than the gut and he explained that antibiotics would only help relieve the symptom and not help the actual issue. So I decided to go to an ENT. Now, I already knew that I suffered from Tonsil Stones but for some reason found it hard to believe that this could be the culprit of my BB. However, my ENT found a lot of stones and man, did they smell like death! Even the tiniest ones carried the biggest stink! ENT told me a tonsillectomy is the only way to get rid of these permanently, so I went home and did a lot of research and that is exactly what I found online. Some people mentioned a Coblation Cryptolysis, which is a partial removal of tonsil tissue and my ENT told me that this is an expensive and risky procedure that most ENT's will not perform because the tonsil stones will return since there is tonsil tissue left behind. So after a lot of thought, I decided to go for it.

I actually got my tonsils removed today. I have to say the procedure went very smoothly and as long as I take my pain meds, I feel very little uncomfort, the hardest thing is sticking to liquids and soft foods for 2 weeks. Now, one of the side effects of a tonsillectomy is foul odor for the first week or two but even with that foul odor I can already tell that I don't have the BB that I use to have before, the smells are just completely different and my foul odor currently is bareable, to the point that I feel completely comfortable speaking very close to face with my mom, who says she also doesn't smell anything anymore.

So even though your tonsil stones aren't visible (because mine weren't, I would have to squeeze them out with my finger) this may be your issue. I tried squeezing them with a swab but it doesn't work quite as well, because with your finger you can emit more pressure. So I suggest going to an ENT. I knew about Tonsil Stones for a long time and knew I had them but refused to believe this was the culprit but after trying EVERYTHING with no permanent results, I realized this had to be it. I will of course give you an update once I have my follow up appointment in two weeks, but I'm feeling pretty confident!

    Good luck!

Lucky for you!! We hope this works and we eagerly await your update in two weeks time.

One thing, people say that the procedure is painful. How was your experience during the operation and during your recovery?

      Thank you!

The procedure itself was not painful at all because I went completely under. It honestly felt like I blinked and woke up but in real time I woke up an hour after going under. I felt very little pain, it just felt like I had a slight sore throat. The pain did get worse when I got home but I immediately took the hydrocodone prescribed and I have been taking that every 4 hours, with just one time having to double up because one dose didn't do enough. Swallowing is hard but I was also prescribed a mouth wash that numbs your entire mouth so that helps with eating. Iced water is also important because the pain doesn't completely go away when you swallow with either medication, although it does reduce it significantly, so ice water causes great relief.

Another important thing to note is that my surgeon used a coblation method rather than laser. Laser is very risky and is more invasive so it damages tissue around the tonsil that takes time to heal, causing a longer and more painful recovery. However, coblation is very direct and only makes contact with the tonsil tissue and that means less pain and faster recovery, plus no risky side effects like with laser! So if you do this try finding a doctor that uses the Coblation method, they are more popular now than they were 2-5 years ago.

Again, I got this done less than 24 hours ago, so in two weeks I'll be able to better tell you how the whole recovery process went. But so far my experience has been better than expected and I hope it stays this way!

We should all state where we are from, if comfortable. It's still a public issue for me and we are not alone!! smile

Hello,  I have suffered from this same problem for many years and at age 67 have finally found something which has helped me.  I read about probiotics and simply bought a pack from Boots Chemist for approx £11 thinking I'd try as nothing to lose.  I am so happy I did as I have experienced such a difference in my breath which is clean at last and noticed a change after only a few days.  I urge anyone who suffers to try these as I have tried so many things in the past which haven't given long term help.  I am so grateful I didn't just give up trying after so many years of misery and embarrassment.

Hi! I also tried oral probiotics but they didn't do much for me but I will look into the brand you are talking about. Thank you!

I really feel all of you and i want to help you guys but i do not know how am i going to start explaining everything. I am in the same situation for more than three years like what you are experiencing having the same symptoms. I have also posted it long time ago but i can say that i am better now compared before.

I have done so many tests and all are normal and the last thing i did was to listen to my body. My gastro told me to identify the food i eat, if there is a reaction then cross that out from ur diet and i did. Also sugar, it is hard to get rid of it but i did try atleast to minimize the intake of sugar. I think some of us here also posted that when they stopped taking food that contains sugar, their bb is gone. Also gluten, i also get rid of the food that contains gluten, though my diet is not 100% gluten free but it still works for me.

I did a research about these and surprisingly it showed that sugar actually increases the acid in the stomach and also if you have prob in your digestive system, it may irritates more esp the intestine. This case is similar to celiac disease. Gluten also plays the same role.

Another thing is make your stomach/ digestive system relaxed because according to my first gastro, if the lining of your stomach is thin or you have hyperacidity, if you stay in a wrong position wherein your stomach is not relaxed then it may produce more acid thats why i believe that yoga really works.

Last thing is proper sleep esp sleep at night. This helps me very much. When i followed the right time and right number of hours to sleep, i felt so much change. This actually helps our body to rejenuvate as well as our mind. The mind/brain is connected in stomach/digestive system. How?hmm i wish i can show you the video 😊 well,i can share more info. And also, one more thing, check your lineage and family history about your sickness. It might be there and perharps you'll know how and why you have this kind of disease.

Pls pm me if you are desperate and let me try to help you smile i am not a doctor but because i understand your situation. And maybe i can give you some more tips. Stay positive guys😊

What's Metronidazole? Is that for acid reflux?

Its a strong version of a medication for deworming .. the difference is that unlike most dewormers it also helps in deworming not just worms but also bacteria that cause trouble in your system.. even the bad odours that emanate from ones body go into check . I know becuase i have used it ...

Where do I get the metronidazole from, do I need prescription from doctor? Thank you!

HEre is a link on metronidazole for you on this site itself. Please read carefully about the product before jump seeming desperate to jump into anything .

You MUST MUST MUST do your research properly about side effects and contraindications ALWAYS!

I was on deworming through metroni in india and it was easier to procure it there. In the west, its tough to procure wihtout prescriptions. You have to try the sites on here and see how you can get hold of it. I do not know how apart from a prescription .....

Just ask your doctor for a prescription and see how it goes.

It does help with helicobacter whcih causes ulcers too

and all forms of anaerobic bacteria.... so the stinks truly vanish for days after usage of it...

My advice is to keep your diet clear of too much simple carbs and sugars, so the body balances out the bacteria levels once you take the medication ... but like i said, nothign without medical advice...

its not so difficult to get access to the metronidazole so its best to take doctors advice

Hi, ive been active relating to this thread for over a year now. I am scheduled to have my palatine tonsils remove next month. What are my symptoms? I have constant post nasal drip and unending mucus coming from my nose. ENT specialist told me that my nose is is clogged with mucus so he prescribed me this nasal sprayer to cure this PND and been using it until now.

Meanwhile going back to my tonsil removal, my doctor suggested that i need to have my tonsil removed since he said that the size of my tonsil is quite big as compared to a regular size of a tonsil. Been also using cotton swabs to put pressure on both sides of my tonsils, and guess what, lots of them pops up!! sad

I dont worry with regards to the recovery of my tonsils since i got this whole summer to recover. What frightens me is that, if i have my tonsil stone removed does my tonsil stones be removed as well? Is is still possible that these tonsils stones will occur in other parts of tonsils like Lingual tonsil?

Nevertheless, im keeping my mind conditioned that these would be the last procedure that i will take with regards to my problem. hoping to get a positive result after. Goodluck guys!
