Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

So are you saying that your bad breath was psychological and not physiological?
    • Posted

Hi genie. I was so convinced that i had BB,judging by peoples reaction when i speak, also i swear i could smell it when i licked my wrist and at meetings i felt like the whole room was drowned in it. However It was all psychological and i regret having ignored health professinals when they told me that they could not smell anything because i would've solved this problem much earlier in my life. Just before giving up (and doing something i dont want to mention here) after many consultations with specialists, operations and remedies I decided to see my GP and he told me straight away that i dont have Halitosis but i have severe depression from Halitophobia. It all started in high school when a classmate told me i had terrible breath and i guess it had an effect on me psychologically because i was severely embarrased and from then i believed i had Halitosis which turned into depression for 10 years. He then put me on antipsychotics for about a month. PLEASE BELIEVE me when i say on the third day i could physically feel my breath getting fresher, i have no technical explanation as to how it happened. When i asked my GP he says the medication fixed the imbalance in the brain and wiped away all the dirt in the brain causing depression. Guys i suck at words i wish i could explain to you in detail  but if you are one of the guys that when you ask a health PROFESSINAL if you have bad breath and they say you dont, the chances are  YOU DONT. One more thing, i also used saline ear drops AT THE SAME TIME i was on antipshycotics maybe they also played a role/ might even be the main cure ( I had an ear infection at a young age) but also try it NB!!

Hi, interesting subject, in a way it's comforting to know that I have not been alone in this battle.

I've gone through all of the same experiences and trials that you have done too mike666.

I today read an interesting post on BLIS K12 and BLIS M18 so I'm going to give them a try.

I've tried many different probiotics before but those are meant to target the specific mouth and throat bacteria.

Has anyone tried those? They are supplied in lozenges which might be more effective than tablets as they stay longer in the mouth.

Please let us know if you have found a solution to the problem.

    Thank you.

      Hi Clarite,

I have also heard of the oral probiotic - BLIS K12 but i have not tried it since it is not available in our country.

Once you give it a try please give us your verdict. It might turn out to be our saviour.

      Thanks.

I have occasionally come across and kept updated with this thread over the past few years as I have previously fount it to be the most helpful. I promised myself that I would share my experience on this thread in particular if I ever had the chance to cure my symptoms, today that day has come.

I am now 21 and I have been suffering from BB since I was about 16 years old. My experience with BB has definitely not been easy but along the years I kind of embraced it and learnt how to live with it. Being so young & having major BB caused me to live through some dark times and it definitely knocked my confidence however I still continued to live a happy, young life.

It was only about 1/2 years ago that I discovered my actual symptoms which was chronic infection of the tonsils along with tonsil stones. Before that and even when I discovered my symptoms I spent years and years of coming in & out of the doctors with advice and medication that just didn't work for me. Eventually, when I got it all together and sucked up my pride I explained everything in fine detail to the GP and I finally came across a doctor that kind of understood what I was going through and therefore referred me to the ENT department at my local hospital. A month after I attended my ENT appointment and the lady had a look at my tonsils and agreed that a tonscilettomy would be the only cure.

6 months later I have had my tonsils removed and I am now recovering on day 2 post op. Bad breath is completely normal during recovery from Tonscilettomy so my mouth isn't completely fresh yet but as I am typing I can tell you that I haven't even brushed my teeth this morning and I can still notice a HUGE difference with my breath.

I am really grateful that I can now continue to lead a happier life and this is just the start for me as I have dreamt about doing many things that I didn't have the confidence to do before due to my embarrassment. However, I will always remain aware that their is still a lot of people going through the same things I was going through, which I understood can be hard. The advice I would give is to just live your life as happy as possible and remember that BB isn't permanent and THERE IS a cure for whatever symptoms you are going through. Just stay patient and eventually you will be blessed. Also do not do what I did and let it hold you back from your dreams!

Even in this lengthy essay I have still missed out a lot of things. Therefore, I will keep checking this thread just in case anyone has any questions.

    Stay happy x

Ok I completely forgot about this forum and only now realised that I promised myself that if I ever found a cure, I would come back here and tell you all what I did to heal this horrible and depressing condition.

That being said, my methods to heal this are quite 'extreme' and are not for the faint-hearted. BUT if you have an open mind, my cure will certainly be your cure.

    Ok here's my story.

I grew up eating a relatively standard western diet. Lots of meat, eggs, processed food, junk food, lollies, processed sugar. I did not drink much water and I did not think twice about my diet. Then I get to the age of 19 and all of sudden I have bad breath. At first I thought it would only last a few days, but it didn't go away. I also started getting some eczema on my face in little spots (Seborrheic Dermatitis). I started to panic a little and search online. I think that's when I found this forum. Anyway somehow I got it in my head that my bad breath was being caused by tonsil stones. So I checked and I definitely had a couple, but not much. One thing led to another and my ENT agreed to a tonsillectomy (why wouldn't he? $$$). Had the tonsils cut out in Nov 2014, and bad breath disappeared for about a week and came back. I was shattered because the operation wasn't cheap and I took time off work for it. Flash forward to July 2015 and I still had bad breath, but also the Seborrheic Dermatitis on my face had gone from manageable to downright painful and embarrassing. It was THIS MOMENT which changed my life forever. Up until this point, I was always looking for some sort of pill or potion to solve my issues (bad breath and seborrheic dermatitis).

Getting to the point - having such bad eczema on my face forced me to look at things a lot differently. I searched up Seborrheic Dermatitis on YouTube and found someone who healed theirs with a low fat wholefoods Vegan diet, high in fruits and vegetables. I was very skeptical, but at this point willing to try anything. So I slowly slowly transitioned my diet and lifestyle over to a very healthy one, and by Nov 2016 had finally healed my skin condition. It wasn't easy and I had many false starts and many ups and downs. But what about the BAD BREATH? Well that still lingered unfortunately. Through my online research regarding the vegan diet, I came across 'fasting'. NOT intermittent fasting, but REAL fasting (for days, weeks and even months). But fasting isn't exactly safe unless you've been eating clean for a year or two (which luckily I had been doing since turning vegan). Anyway so I somehow stumbled upon a FB page called the Master Fast System. It's teachings really resonated with me and I decided to do it over Nov/Dec 2016. I lasted 33 days and my breath smelt SO BAD during the fast. However after I broke the fast, it was gone, and has not returned. I continue to eat a low fat vegan diet based mainly on fruit, and my health is getting better with each passing day.

Ok so why did 'fasting' help with my bad breath, and why can it help with yours? Well here's the answer: our gastrointestinal tracts are so full of toxic undigested foods and waste products that the smell is wafting up through our mouths. Fasting gives the body a break and allows it to heal by flushing these toxins out. That is the simple answer. But before you consider fasting, there are some IMPORTANT resources I recommend you look at (ALL FREE):

    - Dr Robert Morse on YouTube; he advocates a fruitarian plant based diet to heal all disease

    - Mucusless Diet Healing System on Google

    - Master Fast System on Facebook and YouTube

Like I said, you will need an open mind, because this method of healing will take months and months, and a lot of dedication. But the goal is to heal your overall body through the process of detoxification, and the bad breath will go away. Once the GI tract is healthy, you won't have any bad breath. Mine still isn't perfect, but it's a lot better, and I no longer have this issue.

If you don't believe what I've done will also work for you, I hope you find something else instead that works. I know this story is a little bit all over the place, but it's 100% the truth and I'm so happy all this has happened to me because it's completely changed my life for the better. Good luck everyone

    Hi mike,

thanks for opening this discussion, i think it gives hope to all of us who are still struggling to find a cure. Unfortunately i haven't found my remedy yet. I have been suffering from PND and BB for over 10 years now, so here's what i have tried and haven't tried (inspired by the suggestions in this thread, might also give a quick summary to all others who don't want to catch up with the whole discussion so far):

already tried (with no success unfortunately):

    - have seen three different ENTs and tried every ointment and saline drops for the nose on this planet :D because all ENTs stated that my inner nose tissue was generally very dry

    - had a surgery to correct my deviated nasal septum because i hoped that better air ventilation leads to less mucus - this surgery had no effect at all, don't do it

    - had ct scan TWICE to check if any of my sinuses were stuffed or inherited a hidden infection - no results, sinuses were free

    - had my lungs checked for any problems that could relate to an excessive mucus production

    - tried avoiding dairy for several weeks because someone in this thread mentioned that this caused his problems

    - had an upper endoscopy of my digestive tract (stomach, esophagus) to check for any kind of reflux or a helicobacter pylori infection

    - tonsils are out of the equation for me because i already had them removed as a kid

    - my teeth, gums and general oral health has always been excellent, i see a dentist regularly

    things i haven't checked yet:

    - someone mentioned the possibilty of an encapsulated infection of the adenoid

    - hidden infection somewhere in the sinuses (thought about nasal irrigation with hydrogen peroxide or baby shampoo, as someone mentioned this as his cure somewhere, but i'm afraid it could make my problem worse by hurting the inner tissue)

    - saline drops for the ears

    - some guys stated it could also be a psychological problem and that there is a condition named halitophobia. Like everyone in this thread i'm suffering enormously from BB but i never had the feeling that i'm just imagining things as i can smell and taste the BB. Anyway i don't want to eliminate this possibility completely and i might have it checked.

    - some intolerance or allergic reaction to any food (this would be very frustrating because it seems like an endless game of trial and error to find it)

The doctors are not 100% sure that PND and BB are related but i can tell that my BB gets worse when my PND is bad, so for me there seems to be direct correlation. Also i have found out that my BB seems to be caused by the bacteria in my mouth, because the only thing that has really helped me in over 10 years is gargling with HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, which kills off...bacteria. This was a game changer for me since it gets rid of BB for at least 24 hours completely (also my PND gets better). Of course this relive is only temporary and cures the symptomes, not the cause. Anyway i'm slowly running out of options that could cure me for good.

Here's what helps me on a daily basis:

    - brushing my teeth 3 times a day

    - flossing

    - gargling with hydrogen peroxide

    - nasal irrigation

Rest i can say is: Hang on guys, i'm convinced there is a cure out there for everyone of us.

Hi, I have also been going through the same nightmare. I have had this chronic horrible bad smelling breath for about 5 years now. Which doesn’t go away with any toothpaste or mouthwash gum candy etc.  I have gone to many dentists and they just say you need a teeth cleaning. One dentist said I needed Laser gum surgery but then my insurance didnt cover it so I couldnt get it done. I went for a second and third opinion one told me I had gingivitis the other told me Periodontal disease and the last said just gingivitis. I do have receding gums. I dont know who to believe or where to go anymore.   I did recently think its my tonsils because I did cough up a tonsil stone a few months back and one of the tonsils is large than the other. Who know that could be it. I also did go to a “Halitosis” doctor which was said to be the best and had the cure no such luck I spent 3 grand on that treatment which didnt work at all. I tried the oil pulling and nothing.  Im all out of ideas. This is a total nightmare. If anyone has any more ideas or if you found a cure please share!!! Its very frustrating and depressing

I think I have stumbled across a cure or partial cure by accident. When I was ill recently I bought a tube of those fizzy multivitamins that you put in water and i've been having 2 every day for the last 3 weeks or so. Since then the foul taste in my mouth has totally gone and my mouth feels 'clean' again, although I still feel insecure and don't want to push my luck as I haven't 'tested' it on anyone to see if my breath really is fresh. I think it's probably the zinc in the tablets more than anything, i read somewhere that zinc neutralises the sulphur that causes odour in your mouth, however I can't back that up with anything, it just seems to work.

Give it a try and see if it helps you.

You mean like Zicam? Or just  regular tablets?

I use Zicam citrus flavor when I get colds but I see no change just make it smell worse.

    • Posted

No I mean the long tube of dissolvable tablets you buy in a pharmacy or supermarket. The most well known brand I think is 'Berocca' but I just use the store's copy of those because they're much cheaper.

I can now confirm this was just placebo or some other random reason. BB returned and am seeking a cure once more.
