Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,
I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.
I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)
I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)
and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)
Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.
I also occasionally get tonsil stones.
I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.
Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.
NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.
I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.
I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.
I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?
Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?
Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

Sorry, but I don't believe in it.
People do smell it, but they don't want to get involved because it's not their problem. Simple like that.
Regarding loved ones, they don't know what to do and don't want to let you down, so they will deny it so you can gain confidence and go ahead with your life.
They don't understand that it's not just a matter of brushing your teeth, so why bother for such a taboo topic? Mainly doctors.
PATM is a narrative created by people who believe others lies. Forget it. Bad smell is not subjective, if it's bad for one person, it's bad for everyone.
Time to get real and find an objective solution.

I agree with you. People will not rub their nose or cover if they can't smell anything. There really smell and BB. It is just that people whom we are close with kept saying they can't just for us not to get offended but they really can smell something. There is really something wrong going on and not just something psychological. Dont lose hope. There is a cure for this and we have to find out. We should not give up.

Hi everybody, I posted on this thread nearly 2 years ago whilst i was recovering from getting my tonsils removed, just giving an update as promised. I suffered from BB from around the age of 16 till 21. The cause of it was chronic infection of the tonsils & tonsil stones. I remember going to the GP countless amounts of times and walking out with medication that didn't work for me. I spent years trying to figure out what it was that made my breath smell so bad until i made the discovery, after that I just pushed & prayed to get what i was going through cured. Skip till now; I'm living a stress free, paronoya free, normal life. Completely cured, no worries about what my mouth smells like anymore. I honestly thank god for answering my prayers but, I know their is loads of us out there that are still searching for a cure. Just keep fighting, no matter what you're going through just keep fighting and praying. I'm sure your time will come quicker than you expect. I've been through it guys and I'm telling you their is a cure for it all!
Stay blessed x

Hi Trevor!
Thanks for your reply.
Question: did you never realize before your breath was caused by tonsil inflammation? Was it mild inflammation? Did you have tonsil stones?
My ENT saw no serious inflammation in my tonsils and I've never realized tonsil stones. Nevertheless, he suggested a tonsillectomy, arguing that it is an anatomical problem. I do feel bad taste behind tonsils, but I'm not sure it is originated there.
As I saw cases of people who did it and the problem persisted, I don't feel confident about it.
I'd appreciate if you could answer my doubts.
Regards!

Is it possible that due to the reflux we do experience for long time, the tonsils get affected/infected/irritated? I now feel something wrong on my throat and tonsils but before i can't feel anything, not even hurtburn but only reflux and pnd. I think i have read some comments that even their tonsils stones were removed or tonsils, still badbreath was not cured. I do believe also that in my case, smell is not originating in the tonsils. 😭

Hi apple!
I read many times that reflux can cause throat inflammation due to the acid.
But I've never read it would affect the tonsils. I think for the reflux to make a damage, it has to reach the area.
I've had a very mild inflammation in my tonsils for a long time, even without reflux. But such an inflammation in the past would not cause such a bad breath. That's why I don't believe it to be my primary cause of bad breath.
When I was trying to search for a cause and focusing on my tonsils, perhaps due to touching them with cotton swabs, or even contracting my throat without realizing, I felt more discomfort in this area. But later I realized I might be causing it.
Pay attention, and if you continue to feel it, search for a doctor.
Kind regards!

Thanks for that. I went to ent before and my throat was examined and there was nothing wrong but i already have bb that time. Now, for having it too long, it is not only mucus i have in the throat but it feels irritated. Hope it is not that serious.
I keep on searching about the symptoms that we have and in my case, the closest one is really sibo. I started having a diet for this and it works specially fermented food but my problem is i cant get fully cured through the diet and if this is associated with bacterial overgrowth- i need to know and consult a dr for another tests(stool test and colonoscopy), perhaps this is the problem.however i am negative with hpylori test... You might want to search and try also if the diet for lgs works for u. It reduces the reflux and the smell

I also went to an ENT he saw nothing wrong with my throat or smelled anything (typical) However one of my tonsils is larger than the other and when I see it in the mirror it has white spots in the back of it and when I get sick for any reason they get bigger. Dr. said its nothing to worry about but he would do the surgery for me.

Hi apple,
I thank you so much for sharing such valuable information!
I read about sibo a couple of years ago, but never found a specialist in my area. I know that the diet is very strict, right? For how long do you plan to keep it?
I read in other forums about people who had reflux and food intolerance, and went on a strict diet for minimum 6 months. They mention that the recovery was slow, but at the end, they not only got better, but also reacquired their ability to digest the foods they had intolerance to. It seems it works like a digestive reboot.
That also makes me wonder about fasting (not the daily intermittent type people are doing now), but a more complete that is made twice or 3 times a year in order to make the digestive system rest.
It is curious that 3 months before my chronic halitosis began, I had an endoscopy in my home country, and it was negative for h. pylori. I wonder if it would bring any different result now. How about hiatus hernia?
I suspect of incomplete digestion, fermentation. The toxic byproducts would go to the blood, and exhaled through lungs. But how do I test this?
Good luck with you diet, keep going! 😃))

Hi Silvia!
The tonsils are part of the body's natural defense system. They get bigger when you get sick, and the most affected side gets the biggest tonsil enlargement.
Mine are also not the same size, right one is bigger and more sensitive.
Regarding the white spots: behind them, the tonsils have small balls that are transparent to white. They are part of the structure.
They are different from tonsil stones, which are solid white/yellow and cheesy.
Usually ENT doctors consider them a problem only if you have very red, big and inflamed tonsils. But they are also open to remove it, if they bring you problems.
Let's keep searching!
Kind regards, people!

I had my flouroscopy requested by my surgeon and hiatus hernia is negative. My stomach is well.
Yes, it is really a long process of healing. The guts need to heal and that is dependent on what we eat. I got that tip from the last GI dr i have consulted and he advised me to make a list which food is acceptable and which causes reflux and then avoid them. In my case, what causes reflux is really sweet food and processed food especially with gluten. Gluten irritates the lining if the intestines.
And yes, you are right, i did fast also and i experienced being bb free and well when i fast but still with the diet. I eat in the morning and my second meal is in the afternoon. My mistake here is i really cant make a very very strict diet thats why perhaps i cant get full recovery. I am now going to buy thr probiotics being suggested in this comments and will try using l glutamine.
It really takes time for the gut to heal and i do agree it is a long process. I hope we can make it and we'll see the progress. This is the tips i can share based on my tests and experiences.
