Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi Mike / Moneygun

Any updates on your bad breath? I have the same symptoms as you guys. I cough up tonsil stones and it smell like morning breath but way stronger. I also get infection around my tonsil so I got it removed but I still have bad breath.

However that ruled out 1 contrubtion to my bad breath.

Now I need to further invertigate and find out what else is giving me the smell.

I found an article on google about H pylori a professor from University of Auckland discuss about the topic and how many people are infect etc. He also talk about the use of metronidazole to treat H pylori. Sound like it is only used as a last resouces to fight H pylori.

    hi apple

    update:

On my previous post I mentioned that I tested Hpylori positive and I started triple therapy medication to eradicate it, i also remember mentioning that I could feel and smell an improvement in the breath, however after the 7days therapy the BB recurred so I went back to my Gastro and he gave me an additional antibiotic called clarithomycin but now I had to take the 3antibiotics plus Ppi for 10 days, I'm now on the 9th day and the enemy is still there, u guys can now imagine what it feels like to have the enemy(BB) and at the same time suffer side effects of the medication and still have to deal with people at work -u become a disaster, real torture. BUT u knw what I'm not giving up yet. I will go see my Gastro again and if he gives me another antibiotic I'll tell him to fly lol I Dnt want to be resistant to the medication. on a serious note, I will be submitting a stool sample to check if the bug is gone (a week after tomorrow), to be honest I think the bug is gone but the BB not! luckily the stool results come along with not only Hpylori results but with results of other bugs if there are any. should everything come clear, I will then have a look at what they call TMAU and if it's possible to test for it and I do test positive I will then throw the towel because TMAU is incurable. I will then accept that I have halitosis and try to live with it (the impossible) just like how people with disabilities do.

here's a question. why is it that in ALL bad breath forums(that I know of) there are absolutely no success stories? I mean there's forum's from 2002 and still those people are still hopeful after 13 years...mmmmhh interesting.

thanks for update..it helps alot... smile

i am also planning to go for stool test for tracing bacteria(hpylori), hopefully doctor will agree and give me referal for that..if negative then maybe we will all fall into TMAU.ive just read about it and so sad it has no cure but good thing there is treatment to lessen the smell.hmmm which doctor or specialist should i ask for this TMAU?gastro still?

    hi Rajesh

I'm glad that I was able to help and I hope that Hpylori is the root cause of your BB and that you get cured forgood.

    Update:

I did go through the Hpylori eradication medication aswell and I have submitted a stool for testing and I will receive results next week, sad to say bad breath hasn't gone though, but maybe I was resistant to medication, maybe Hpylori is cured and was not the root cause of my BB, ill just have to wait and see.

I did mention on my last post that I had lost hope and that if my Hpylori results come back negative ( meaning Hpylori has been cured)

I will then get tested for TMAU if positive then accept the BB and have to live with it since TMAU is incurable. I also mentioned that in ALL forums I have come across there are absolutely no success stories of BB, well I recently came across 1 only one and he was cured by having his 'Adenoids' removed. Now all of us will talk for days about 'tonsils'

and 'tonsillectomy' to my surprise I actually didn't know that adenoids serve the very same purpose as tonsils (meaning they trap bacteria to protect us from getting sick) and so if tonsils give you BB adenoids gives you BB too- to me that's not rocket science I was just uninformed. so now what's the way forward, i will visit my ENT who remove my tonsils 3years ago and ask him to remove them for me. I have this powerful feeling of hope that I have found my cure- I mean my symptoms are so obvious 1.PND!!!!! 2.chronic blocked nose 3.sinus issues 4.bad bad morning breath 5.feeling tired all the time 6.headaches 7.difficulty swallowing 8.waking up with a funky throat.

I will update you when I do get my adenoids removed and if the enemy has been eradicated.

Thanks for encouraging comments Brandon!!I hope H.Pylori is the root cause for me..I hope and pray that you get cured of your BB as well..My symptoms are pretty similar to your symptoms feeling too tired!!Bad breath causes headaches!!Morning Bad breath(Also comes some times evening too)..But I realised lately whom my stomach was empty the bad breath increased with stomach growling!!I even had my gums inflammation due this acid relfux!!I visited many dentists thinking that it is gum problems!!Bit ur results gave me the indication the symptoms I face could be related to my gut and gastritis!!That is when I went to the Gastro!!Let us all keep posted our findings..I am sure this would help people like Mike and many many who are suffering from this most Horrible symtpoms!!Trust me none of the doctors so far could give me the solution so far ..Only reading thru this forums and doing self analysos I could fnd out what I was suffering from!!Kudos to this forum

thanks for the update  again brandon, please dont lose hopes.we have to try all possibilities!we have to live and deal with it!

i have the same symptoms like yours and also bloating as well...but right now i have strong feeling that it is a bacteria like SIBO which also having the same kind of symptoms. unfortunately i cant still find a new gastro doc that can analyze my case. but to be honest, my BB sometimes randomly goes away, specially if i am fasting, as in no smell, i dont know if because of the food i am eating or something else. because usually if my BB is gone and once i eat food specially sweet, then the smell goes back so quickly!

i also searched about tmau. and i have less feeling that this is our case because i asked someone who have it and he is not experiencing symptoms like what we have aside from the smell that is coming out in himself(he said maybe it is from his sweat). but i am not sure if tmau also having different symptoms but all i know in tmau, the smell comes out in all open areas.

do update always guys...we can make it!...

Hi Rajesh, we might be suffering from TMAU. What is your Facebook id screen name.I will add you. Iam from India where doctors don't have any idea about my problem and saying that " All this is because of me,my thinking in my brain 😞

i think its something else and not TMAU but let you annalize also..for me it seems like gut issues, i can get most of symptoms in leaky gut syndrome and i think thats most of the cases here thats why when they avoid sugar, it somehow cure their BB, but when they take again foor that contains sugar, the BB comes back. i dont know if this is a lifetime treatment and diet...my case now is a bit okay than before, with proper diet(i followed the diet in leaky gut syndrome you can google it) healthy lifestyle and proper rest.but sometimes it is going worst sad maybe this is really a lifetime treatment ;( but i know mine is not TMAU because two people spoke to me who have tmau and share their case, they dont have reflux, hard swallowing etc like mine, their feeling is normal except the smell  and i think most cases of tmau is the smell is coming from their swet like the two guys who spoke to me...hope this make sense.

and yeah doctors dont know about it so end result is psychological disorder(its all about your thiinking and biorythm)..

      Hi brandon25221,

Your case sounds similar to mine.....

      1) did quadruple antibiotic therapy work for you?

      2) have you managed to remove your adenoids?, if so did it work?

      3) have you thought of getting lingual tonsils removed?

      Thanks

PS. I am goingt to get my tonsils removed, if that does not work i will have to research/think about getting my lingual tonsils removed.

I went to ent doc and he said i hardly have any adenoids left (they tend to dissappear as you become an adult, im 31)

I did remove my tonsils couple of years back and it didnt help. I used to have tonsil stones more often when i had my tonsils but the bb remained after surgery

Im assuming you had your palatine tonsils removed, have you thought of getting your lingual tonsils removed?
