Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi guys,

I created an account on this website just to post a response on this thread and tell you a success story (two days clear so far) about bad breath.

I'm 21, and have had a debilitating bad breath problem for almost two years now.

I have pretty bad post-nasal drip and my diet isn't the greatest.

I've tried the following methods to kill my halitosis:

    -removal of tonsils

    -frequent dentist appts

    -mouthwash

    -blood tests

    -urine tests

    -h.pylori test

    -check for diabetes/kidney issues

    -brushing three times a day

    -salt water gargle

    -tongue-scraping

    -flossing

and the list goes on and on. The other night, my dad stumbled onto a potential fix that was highly recommended on a site called (site that people post on with home remedies for health problems). The steps were as follows:

    1. Buy a 3% concentrate of hydrogen peroxide

    2. Dilute it 50/50 (which essentially becomes 1.5% concentrate)

    3. Tongue-scrape, floss and brush as normal, then dip toothbrush head into solution and brush around gums and tongue lightly.

    4. Gargle with solution for 30 seconds and DO NOT SWALLOW.

My bad breath was gone after the above steps were taken, and has not returned for apprx 3 days.

Peroxide is an easy product to buy, just go to your local chemist and purchase one (IT'S ESSENTIAL NOT TO BUY A PEROXIDE WITH HIGHER THAN 3% CONCENTRATE). I highly recommend doing a bit more online research on your own before you follow the above steps, because I have heard of some complications (hairy tongue etc) from breaching these steps. Please note that I am not a professional in any way, so please do not quote me or hold me accountable for any issues that may arise from this recommendation.

I strongly hope this works out for all of you. However if it doesn't, I suggest taking some blood/urine tests in case there is an underlying issue at hand.

Good luck, and don't give up hope!

    Regards

    Janon

thanks janon for sharing! ive heard this from others aswell though havent tried yet... maybe i have to give a try this time wink

by the way are you not experiencing nasal BB?

    • Posted

      Hi Apple,

What do you mean by Nasal BB?

The whole issue with my bad breath was the unknown cause of it.

I tried the hydrogen peroxide method, which is a means of killing all bacteria in the mouth, and it is successful so far.

I will post updates on any changes.

nasal BB means there is also bad smell coming out to your nasal.nasal bad breath.thats why some used an irrigator to somehow cure that but i dont knnow if you are experiencing the same...are you also suffering from acid relfux? or any other thing which you think related to your BB?

      No I don't believe so.

Like I said earlier, I am unsure as to the cause of my bad breath.

However, due to the results I've experienced with peroxide, I can assume that it has to do with bad bacteria in my mouth/throat.

I would have no idea/experience on any other causes of bad breath. I am merely providing a method that has worked for me so far.

Have you had a chance to try it?

oh not yet, the one i have was already expired so i have to buy new one :D

maybe mine is different from yours but with similar symptom. will still try if peroxide will work/help! thanks

Hi janon. Any update on the effect of H2O2 on your BB so far? Its days since you last communicated.

I think we all have the same problem and the majority of people in numerous forums can confirm they also have some type of digestion issue and clearly not a hygene issue.. For me, my irritable bowel, acid reflux and BB started at the same time(around age 12). At age 14 i begged my mother to take me to the doctor who said it is probably post nasal drip but the meds didnt help. The next year the gastroenterologist that was treating my acid reflux said the meds for the acid reflux(propulsid&zantac) will help if indeed that was the cause. I was thrilled unitl i started the meds and it didnt help. The next year I went to a dentist that had an ad in the newspaper for curing bad breath, he had a special diagnostic tool and a magic mouthwash, I went to him and had a gum cleaning and a confirmation that i had BB(as if i didnt know) and then i started the special mouthwash that of course didnt work. After 20 years and spending a small fortune on trendy mouthwashes and nasal drops and lozenges etc. I was given metronidazole after a root canal and my BB was gone but like most stories, it returned shortly after finishing the antibiotic..I now obtain metronidazole(made in america) on the black market before a party or a vacation just to have temporary normal breath.. I am going to start a low FODMAP diet, take digestive enzymes, probiotics and oral probiotic lozenges and if that doesnt work then i dont know what will.  I will let everyone know if this works.

Can you give us an update on how this particular problem is going for you?

I just made an account after reading this thread because i'm having the same problem and would like to know if there's any long-term benefit of antibiotics.

First off, I want to thank mike666 for having the courage to start this thread. A lot of the stuff mentioned here is useful informations that we all could learn from.

I am too have been suffering with this BB plague ever since I was a little kid. My dad and my daughter also have BB. It appears as if it is a disease that runs in the family. I have acid reflux ever since I was a little kid. I do have a mild periodontal disease. I used to have tonsil stones. I do have a white coating on my tongue. I have spent lots of money on Dr. Katz remedies, mouthwashes, peroxide, breath mint, chewing gum, baking soda, etc without positive or lasting results.

I think the source of my BB is from my stomach. In fact I think I may have h. pylori. I am experimenting with Pyloricil, an herbal remedy for h. pylori, along with 50 billion cfu probiotic, digestive enzymes, and chlorophyll tablets. On top of these tablets, I also do a nasal rinse twice a day using a neti pot, 150mg Ranitidine for acid reflux, and vitamin c supplements. Are these going to help rid of my BB?Not sure, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

I will post my update after a few weeks.

    Hello all,

I started following this and noticed similar BB symptoms:

-Felling of something stuck in the back of your throat

-dry tongue (some don't have saliva)

-docs not smelling the BB when you are with them,

-Some docs make you feel that it's all in your head bc they don't know what to diagnose or test for.

-Symptoms don't improve after antibiotics or get worse after you do.

    -IBS

-fecal mouth odor even if your bowel movement is regular

In my situation I was misdiagnosed for acid reflux/gerd. I took this med for a year.

Gastro Tested me for h.plovri. I don't have it.

Endoscopy & biopsy come back. I'm fine.

I DO NOT HAVE ACID REFLUX. That is a good sign but was also tested for SILENT ACID REFLUX. (Also don't have)

Stool tests. I don't have parasites, etc.

I'm waiting for CANDIDA BLOOD TESTS.

the reason I'm staying my Odyssey is that I believed docs & took meds. Once I noticed the antibiotics & acid reflux meds didn't work I kept going to Different ENTs bc they kept telling me I had gerd.

I finally insisted on throat swabs & came back with strep throat but that is not the root of the problem.

After finally getting PROPER TESTING, my allergist, gastro & nutritionist narrowed things out.

My nutritionist suggested it was candida In my first visit to him. I'm following a diet, which is helping but he did warm that it's difficult to treat & will take time.

Since I took so many antibiotics last year it killed my good bacteria in my gut. I'm rebuilding my immune system eating right, vitamins, minerals & still waiting for blood results today.

At times I did feel discouraged bc of the BB & ppl reactions. It's affect both my jobs & not the person I used to be.

I want all of us to help motivate & find out what this is. Even if docs give up.

I always suggest to see a DOCTOR NO MATTER. Get proper blood work in your first visit, research & ask your doctor questions! Find specialists and ask for blood work, throat swabs.

in my experience I was NOT TESTED WITH BLOOD WORK. Was misdiagnosed but I insisted on followup & finally meet a get allergist that suggested what blood lab to ask my docs for.

Of course, I did exams, endoscopy/colonoscopy.

Since I found a new gastro I will ask if I need a new colonoscopy to narrow this down.

I keep everyone posted & please response if I missed anything. Sorry for a long forum. I'm Judy here to inform & help from my struggle as well.

Hi, Chris. I'd posted a comment 8 days ago and it was deleted for some reason. So, I will try again. I have suffered from this all of my life and am very sociable. So, for me, the research never ends. I've been tested for every single thing listed in this forum. Although I do have some of the issues (I.e., dry mouth, nasal drip, etc), my problem is volatile sulfur compounds in the mouth. My body over produces the bad bacteria and causes foul mouth odors that can be smelled from a distance. Several of my doctors felt I was exaggerating and suggested many of the same things mentioned here, in terms of testing for GERD, visiting Dentist, etc. I have used several products for VSCs that were not successful. I started using something, on my own, that proved successful for me. Once I've brushed my teeth and tongue really well with toothpaste, I go back and dip a clean toothbrush in Vinegar and brush my entire tongue, including back area, while leaning over bowl for about 30 seconds. I go back and rinse that out taking care not to swallow as I do have some problems with GERD. This is now part of my daily routine and, so far, I have not had to use a tongue scraper or had complaints about my breath.

I would suggest to you, Chris, to take care in not swallowing the peroxide as it can cause GERD. I used it for years before trying other home remedies. As always, check with your doctor before trying anything. Hopefully, my comment remains and this helps.

Hello Yurka, Thank you for taking time to response. I appreciate it.

when you brush your tongue w vinegar, any vinegar? And then you rinse w peroxide?

      How often do you brush?

I used to brush after every meal but my dentist said I am over doing it on my enamel.

I use a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash from a store. But the oral surgeon that noticed I have pockets between my molars & teeth told me to stop using the hydrogen peroxide.

I'm looking to go where I had my molars removed years ago bc I still have the other s & really painful now.

I just Don't know if removing them will solve this sulfur odor.

I suspect it is my tonsils since the swelling is going down I can't fully get in to check if I have tonsils stones but the q tips I use smellhorrible about that side & back of the tongue that touches my right side tonsil.

I still try to go out but it is overwhelming.

Yurka, I also have ppl that smell this from a distance. It is something I breath out. I had chest xray but I'm fine. My tongue is dry & white all the time.

Thanks Yurka1 for your contribution. Which vigegar did you use - white or colored on?

Hi, Patrick. Remember, my problem is volatile sulfur compounds. The vinegar I use is white vinegar. I drink a tablespoon of Apple Cider vinegar in 8oz bottled water for other purposes. However, I brush with white. I, too, have problems with tonsiloliths(tonsil stones); however, if you can keep the bacteria on the back of your tongue to a minimum, you won't have that problem so much as this is why the stones are formed: build up of food/bacteria. I, also, wash out my tonsils if I ever feel or taste a stone. I order a syringe-like product called monoject. Don't worry. It doesn't have a needle. It's specifically designed for that. You simply fill it with warm water, turn off light in bathroom, and use a flashlight to look at the back of tonsils, stick out tongue as far as you can and open mouth wide while spraying the stream to wash out tonsil stones. Here is my morning routine:

      1. Brush teeth and tongue really well with toothpaste. Rinse mouth and brush tongue with clear water until paste is gone. (Before I started using vinegar, I had problems removing the white sulfur coating so I had to use a tongue scraper. I don't need the scraper anymore as the vinegar helps to balance the bacteria.)

      2. Pour white vinegar over bristles of toothbrush and lean over bowl to brush tongue for about 30 seconds. Rinse mouth with water and brush tongue again with plain water. If you choose to gargle, do not swallow as it can cause GERD. I use the vinegar only once a day: in the mornings.

      3. Never brush TEETH with vinegar.

I am so very excited to discover that this helps and my friends have not claimed about my breath. I had nearly gone into depression over this.

If you'd Google volatile sulfur compounds and halitosis, you would get a clearer understanding of why your tongue is white and why you breathe nasty smells through your mouth AND nose. Having bad breath while speaking is bad enough. But breathing out odors through your mouth is something I never ever grasped until reading about VSCs. I hope this helps. As always, talk to your doctor before trying anything.
