Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

Lately I found a post on this site which I will quote below. It seems to be reducing my bad breath quite a lot so I thought i'd share it. Also went to the dentist recently and everything is fine so I can rule out dental problems. Here is the quote:

"This has worked for me and may work for you if you are having the same root cause of bad breath which I

believe most people do. It usually comes from the tongue I am a Dental Hygienist so I see this daily. The tongue has many pits and fissures and is almost like a rug which can trap a lot of things like food, bacteria mucus. In order to clean it properly you need to use a tongue snapper first to clean the very back of it until you see no more gunk coming off of it and then the key is to use a manual tooth brush with two pea size amounts of tooth paste I like Arm and Hammer with peroxide to Bush in a circular side to side up and down motion for about a minute and a half then you need to rinse with water well and gargle. Now you may notice your breath smelling even more than before which is because you have brought the bacteria's "poo" to the surface and mixed it around. Now brush your tongue again the same way for a minute and a half make sure you get the very back this is also a key step and really brush well back there cause that's where the bacteria is, standing on one foot will help you keep from gagging. Rinse and repeat brushing again if you tongue isn't relatively pink or if you still smell your own breath but don't do it more than 3 times total cause this indicates maybe you have another type of bad breath problem. Do this after you eat brushing your teeth when your done with your tongue and you should have fresh breath all day and relatively even when you wake up in the morning. Make sure you get the whole tongue systematically brushing and time it a minute and a half is a long time. I have tried everything myself and nobody taught me this in school I came up with it on my own after lots of trial and error. I hope this works for you."

I have noticed that If I dairy or coffee orange juice the breath gets worse! I have stuck to sugarfree gum and cold water

Yes, not just certain foods, every food contributes to this problem and particularly dairy, coffee or any sugary drink works fast in making the breath worse. Saliva is the thing which needs to clear out the remaining food in our mouth before the anaerobic bacteria feeds on it. But I guess, they acts quickly, multiply and leave those VSCs which is the white appearance in the tongue. My question is, how to eradicate these anaerobic bacteria. Any idea?

I read that zinc and kelp tablets used with a spoon of coconut oil everyday helps get rid of any body odor including BB.  This is something called TMAU.   Im willing to try it

After trying everything in the world, even getting my tonsils removed, I finally found something that has improved my BB by an ~80% and counting. Apple Cider Vinegar before every meal!!! I started with a teaspoon and now I do about a tablespoon (do not dilute the ACV). I also take more ACV when I eat bigger and more processed meals. I also do probiotics, but from traveling to Barcelona back in August, I learned that probiotics should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably when you wake up in the morning (this is the brand I buy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DN9N5UW - it's the same one I bought in Barcelona and it worked like a charm!). I noticed a huge difference once I started doing both of these things.

I learned that my BB was due to acid reflux, even though I suffered from 0 heartburn. It was actually my ENT who discovered acid sitting in my throat. I was prescribed Omeprazole and Zantac which only made my BB worse. After doing extensive research and visiting a holistic nutritionist, I found out that acid reflux is caused by LOW stomach acid and not by the contrary popular belief that it's caused by too much acid. This makes sense because the prescriptions I was given reduce acid production and they only made matters worst.

Another tip** I use hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash, which I dilute with water. I gargle in my mouth for 1 minute and do a second round for my throat for 30 seconds. This works way better than any mouthwash I've ever tried.

I am now trying this, thanks for the suggestion. Will report my results back in a week or so.

I agree. I've recently discovered that if you are blood type A then you have low stomach acid, therefore needing aid in digesting food. I started taking a probiotic and enzyme complex (any brand should do) and it has tremendously reduced my bad breath. While the instructions said to take one twice a day with my heaviest meals I am only taking one a day cause after two weeks I noticed taking two a day was giving my mouth weird bitter taste. Maybe it was just too much. Also, I had to take a break from them for about a week for the same reason, only it was a different taste. I'm back taking them and my breathe feels a lot cleaner. If you're type A it is recommended you stay away from beef and dairy as we have trouble digesting these foods. Pineapple and lemons are recommended because they are alkaline once in our system. Hope this info help! Good luck!

Honestly I can't really tell if it's working. I THINK it's working as normally I have a horrendous taste in my throat all day and when I yawn I get a taste of death which I have always attributed to tonsil stones caused by post nasal drip. On every day of this week that has been absent except for on Tuesday but I cannot explain it. Going to give it more time to make sure it isn't a cruel placebo effect but things are looking good.

On a side note I am still getting post nasal drip which plays a part in making my mouth taste very stale by the end of a work day, but I imagine this is a problem that a large proportion of people get so I am trying not to overthink that.

I will try to give another at the end of next week.

It seems, there is a connection, coz I am A+ve. I am going to try this method. Gonna get started by including ACV in my daily routine. And thank you so much for this info, as I was hopeless and got no idea about this issue. Will report back with the results soon.

Any luck, I am dying to find a solution. This is affecting my job!! There has to be a reason for all of this.

Hi, how long have you had it? Do you know your blood type? You can start by staying away from certain foods that make it worse, depending on your blood type. There's info on the internet on this. Hope this helps

My blood type is A+, has been going on for 2 yrs..

I can now confirm that the ACV isn't helping me, still getting a horrible bitter taste in my throat.

I've had BB for years, not really sure for how long because i can't pinpoint when it started but I believe it was caused due to various antibiotic treatments i went through. At the time, I wasn't taking probiotics and taking several rounds of antibiotics definitely messed with my bacterial flora. I also know it's not related to food intolerances because i have tried several diets with no luck and the only one that I saw a huge improvement with was with a sugar-free diet, which makes sense because back bacteria feeds off sugar.

My blood type is O+, the most common one.

I'm sorry to hear that. Are you buying organic ACV?

Also, you should try the probiotics I recommended. I know the instructions aren't in English and they take a while to get delivered but they're so worth it! I'm currently waiting for my 3rd one to arrive. Or maybe you can try another kind and take it on an empty stomach. I like bio-k in the USA.

I have already done 2 treatments of the probiotic i recommended and my BB is now very mild (and to be honest, i haven't been the most consistent at taking the probiotic) but I'm pretty sure that with this last treatment my BB will be gone.

for how many years of struggle and figuring out the root cause, i left out with this clue that the problem is in the intestines. there is bacterial imbalance-good and bad bacteria. that's why most of us, sugar free diet works, probiotic works, and acv. the guts should heal so it will function normally again... i think this is also what they called leaky gut syndrome. you can search for it and the diet available... i also have rashes or eczema on my feet so i guess a sign that I'm having this. do you guys also have some rashes or eczema or skin disease?

can I ask what are the probiotics you recommend? I think I'll try It. I too had multiple rounds of antibiotics and also had SIBO. so my bacteria flora is all messed up and when that happens your yeast is also out of balance. That's why when I dont eat sugar bad breath leaves. sighs it's so tiring.

Hi I have noticed that even when I wake up on an empty stomach my breath is horrid. It gets worse with any kind of food or drink.

Is hydrogen peroxide really safe? Like when you gargle and some amount will be swallowed? Is that okay?
