Bad digestion

I have been diagnosed with UC for four/five years now and had quite a few issues and flare ups. I was originally on asacol tablets however I passed them straight through into my stools like clockwork. My doctor informed me that it was just the shell of the meds however I disagreed. I did the unthinkable and retrieved the tablets from my stool and they were in tact. My doctor agreed and said this was the cause of my continuous flare ups. He then put me onto Salofalk a granule medication to help with my digestion which I saw an improvement in straight away. However one year down the line I am again seeing the granules passing through my stools in tact. On some occasions they have remained at the bottom of my toilet and unable to flush away because of the sheer mass of the granules (sorry for the detail hah). I was just wondering if others have had this issue with digestion. My doctor mentioned a few years ago this may be a result of some kind of kidney abnormality however I've not pursued it and tried to get on with my life! Was wondering if others have had this and any advice out there? I have just begun another flare up so any advice would be great. Thanks!

Hi. I had a similar problem to you when I was on ipocol (a very very similar med to asacol). initially i had tablet shells in my stools, but the manufacturer said this was normal. i then started to get partially intact broken tablets in my stool ( which i had to find out the same way you did for a few weeks with disposable plastic spoons & loo roll, so you're not alone!!) I tried taking them 1.5hrs away from food times & with about 3/4 pint of water & this did the trick. i still got distorted broken tablet shells but that was apparently normal. you could try this even with your granules & see if it helps, every one is different. i am on a different med now as ipocol stopped working for me. hope this helps

Thank you for your advice I'm going to try take more water when taking them. Yeah I have some prednisolone steriods to clear the flare up so hopefully this and manageing my nerves will stabilise it. Thankyou again and wish you the best!

p.s - if you're flaring again, it could be because your salofalk is going straight through you maybe?? i find oral prednisolone very effective in calming down a flare too (my gp usually prescribes this). you could try what i said about taking your salofalk with good amount of water a bit of time away from food times, to see if it helps absorption/improvement of your flare up, & maybe ask your doc for some prednislone. (it'd be a good idea to keep checking you're stools if you try this to see if it works) good luck
