Bad few days with hiatus hernia, looking for support.

Hi, I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia this year. I began having problems in December. I was given a variety of drugs (omeprazole, lanzoprazole and ranitidine) and they all eventually gave me horrible side effects. It took a long time to recover from these drugs. I've been managing the HH through diet, lifestyle and sometimes Gaviscon and thought I was doing OK. This week something has triggered the reflux to be much worse, my sternum and back are aching and I haven't slept properly for 4 nights due to nausea. I'm so upset, I'm not sure what to do, I'm scared to eat and barely eating anything. I feel so alone and anxious, it's such a horrible condition. I can't seem to take medication so should I push for an op? It is a small HH but I feel like acid is damaging my insides and it scares me. I'm sorry for the moan but it would be good to get advice from fellow sufferers. Thanks, Laura.

If it is hiatus hernia, demand for proper surgery. Trust me the drug really give you a lot of side effect and cause damage to your organ for long term use. Eating habit change will help and sleeping 45 angle is no fun. life is like roller coaster, some day good some day bad.
Those doctor always say use drug like PPI, H2 blocker but it just suppressing the problem not fixing it, sometimes make it worse.
I was suffering 3cm Hiatus hernia and taking drug make it worse with indigestion, bloating and can't even laying down else reflux. (tip: if you are taking the drug blocker your stool yellow or light colour which means you body not digesting)
I decided to look for an experience gastro surgeon to fix it and it is the best action done. I have my normal life and social life back. To have the surgery will also depend on age, if you still young have the surgery done. Yes, it will be risk for 75 age above but depend on health condition.
we need our life back, so fixing is the answer not control it. HH can only get worst and also become complex. Have surgery to fix it while small and life back to normal. remember continue to have good diet.

Thanks jazz81195 for your reply. I agree that the problem needs to be fixed, not controlled. PPIs made me very ill so will not take them again. I'm 41 and in good health otherwise so hopefully surgery would be a good option for me. Laura

i hear that same story over and over. i too suffered for 25 years with the same problems. The best advise is to get a very experienced GASTROINTEROLOGIST OR A THORASIC DOCTOR to get more opinions. i finally got the proper tests done to evaluate my problems. YOU do not have to suffer like that. I HAD FUNDOPLICATION SURGERY AND NOW FEEL GREAT. i am off all medications and eat most anything. good luck

So glad to hear you're feeling better Janis. I've been suffering for 7 months, can't imagine suffering for 25 years, poor you! I will persevere with getting the right treatment as it's affecting everything in my life including my mental health, social life, relationships etc. I will pester the NHS till they sort me out!
