Bad hip causing back pain

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hello!  I need to have a THR as my hip is completely bone on bone.  I've had pain in my knees for almost 20 years (getting consistently worse) because the hip bone is resting on some nerves.  However, I am now getting pain in my rear end and very lower back on the side of my bad hip.  Do you have any suggestions on how to alleviate this nerve pain?  I've gotten used to my knee pain, but the back pain is harder to deal with.  I plan on getting my THR late this year or early next year.  Thanks for any suggestions at all!

If I were you, I would go see a Chiropractor, he/she probably could help you.

Your bad hip/bad knees are most likely leading to you not walking correctly and leading to your rear end/lower back pain.

    Good Luck  biggrin

Yes. A chiropractor helped me too. I go a few times a year and I get by with no meds!!  You have to get a good one though.

I agree with you about a good one.  There are many of them out there.

I've walked with a limp for about 20 years now, however, it has become much more pronounced in the last 3 months.  When I saw my Dr. and he stated that it was my hip (and not my knee where all my pain was), he said that at the point my hip was he has seen patients go downhill very quickly.  I don't know if it was because he said it or because it really is getting worse that quick - but it is definately happening. I planned on January for various reasons, but am looking at December now.  I know that the THR is the only thing that is going to fix the problem.  confused

Physio helped me when I was getting pressure on my sciatic nerve. THR solved all the pain!

I used to get pain in my butt too! Like right between the checks!!! I would go to work & about an hour into work it would start and not go away until I went to bed. I started icing and that helped a lot. I had shots done in back but I don't think it really helped. After I quit working, it took about a year it stopped!! I don't know if it was stress or what. I have some back issues as I was born with one leg shorter. Not sure this helps. Hope you feel better! LD

I've always had my pain in my knees which I've learned over 20 years to deal with.  The back pain is new and so much harder to deal with.  Makes me feel bad for anyone that has back issues.  Sitting in a chair gets very painful.

    Hi Michelle,

I have had back pain for along time, but when I started with hip pain I also started with sciatica, after my op the sciatica pain was worse than the operation. The best and only thing I find that works for nerve pain is a Tenns machine. You can buy then from eBay, I paid around £25 or your Boots will sell them.

    Hope this helps

    Kind regards

Hi Michelle - sorry for your troubles, but glad to hear that you are lined up for surgery soon. In my experience the sooner the better. Once the hips degenerate to a certain point it did get worse quickly and the bone on bone pain was pretty grim. Worse it starts affecting other joints as bad posture and uneven gait causes uneven wear everywhere else.

So ... don't wait too long.

I strongly believe in aqua therapy. The best are clinics with physiotherapists but you can use your local pool if you consult with a physisiothrapists on recommended exercises to do. It is super as it relaxes your joints and muscles (weightlessness) and the extra resistance of the water makes your exercises me effective.

I hope you go ahead with this - it was a good decision for me and I get my second one next week.

Last thought - check out Rocketman's website (see the moderators respurces on the main discussion page for this forum). Graham (aka Rocketman) is a forum member who has assembled a brilliant collection of info about hip replacement and summarized many of the excellent tips, advice and observations contributed by forum members. It is fabulous resource.

    Best of luck
