Bad migraine after first patch - coincidence or side effect ?

Hi,

So after struggling with menopausal symptoms for 18 months ( Im 52 )and having spent a small fortune on " natural " remedies I decided to try Evorel Conti patches.

I was getting at least 10 hot flushes daily and my mood was awful.

I was a bit headachy a few days before starting the patches, but the morning after the first patch woke with a full blown migraine and still suffering 4 days later.

Im not sure if its a start up side effect of the patch or whether its a coincidence and I was going to get a migraine anyway.

Just wondered if this had happened to anyone else .

Thanks

    Hi Alison,

I can share my experiences. My migraines were cyclical before menopause. I would get one almost always 2 days before my period and occasionally 1 other mid cycle,

Since I became peri- menopausal and now full blow menopausal, they changed. I got them every 7-10 days so that is almost 4 a month. They are brutal and impact how I live.

I tried the minivelle patch (lowest does available) 3 years ago and it gave me a headache (not migraine) every day I wore it. I ended up taking it off after 7 days . When I took it off, I got a terrible migraine within 24 hours.

Fast forward to 6 weeks ago. I started bio-identical hrt. I am now taking bi-est cream applied 1x a day. It is an 80/20 formual of estriol (80) and estradiol (20). Estriol is a gentler form of estrogen that our body produces. I am also taking 75 mg of oral progesterone.

My meno symptoms have improved slightly. Getting less hot flashes but still getting them. Sleep is still a challenge. Still very achey and sore muscles and my anxiety is about the same.

However, I am so pleasantly surprised that my migraines have decreased!!! I have only had 2 bad ones in 6 weeks. That is amazing for me. I've had some smaller tension headaches but nothing that a tylenol can't get rid of.

I just did a saliva test to check on my levels (per my ob/gyn) and will possibly tweak the hrt depending upon those results and my symptoms. I haven't received the results yet.

I don't know about conti patches so have no idea the formulation but you may want to check out other forms of hrt.

      Thanks for reply.

I used to suffer with Migraines but hadnt had a full blown one for months -until I started the patches less than week ago .

Ive taken the patch off and will call my GP tomorrow.

The NHS tend to give a one size fits all Hrt and bio identical ones are not fully endorsed. We can pay privately of course !

I instinctively feel this dose wasnt right for me as I literally woke up feeling ill the morning after applying the patch.

Seems like theres some tweaking to be done !

Just feel in the wilderness at times with this menopause journey.

      Thanks again
