Bad wind and bloating after Hellers Myotomy??

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with Achalasia and had hellers myotomy done second week in March. I have to say i have been able to keep everything down I have eaten since then but I have the most terrible wind and bloating.

No matter what I eat, even a cracker, I get really bad wind stomach ache and I bloat so badly I cannot put on a pair of jeans.  I live on Windeze tablets which I buy from a paramacy. They are designed to beak up wind.  Nothing really seems to be helping me but it is REALLY embarrassing. When I go out I am so worried that the wind will decide to move if you get me.

Has anyone else suffered this way following the surgery?  Has anyone got any ideas on how to make it stop?

    Hi Kathy,

I have not had this procedure so I can't suggest what may help under your circumstances. However, I have had wind and bloating on occasions, whether related to achalasia I am not sure. What I have found helpful under those circumstances is Immodium with simethicone as an ingredient. Hope this or something else helps soon.

Hi Kathy,  I had the procedure , it will be a year in October.  Glad your doing well, me too.  I don't have the bloating issues but do have alot of gass.  I know that dairy causes alot of issues for me, so I try to limit the dairy.. I take fennel drops  daily which  helps me.. It comes in a tea as well.. Give that a try.

If your wind would clear a room it might be to do with bacteria / infection in your gut, and you might need to see a  gastroenterologist who might prescribe antibiotics.   In one way this would nto be surprising because for a long time your system has not had a proper flow of food travelling through at the right speed.

But it also sounds a little bit like colic / trapped wind?   Try gripe water.

I think I would contact your surgeon's secretary / nurse for advice because I suspect that this might be a regular side effect of the surgery.

Well it seems then that gas/wind comes with the territory.  The weird thing is when the gas decides it time to move, it does not smell its just extremely loud ... no this is not a wind up it really is happening .... its really embarrassing.  I have been taking windeze with simeticone (125mg) as the active ingredient.  I also take omeprazole 4 times per day to stop acid and heartburn.

I also have IBS which since the surgery has been totally out of control.  I suppose thats because my bowel was not used to normal use through eating for such a long time before the surgery and now it is being asked to work normally it's decided its not happy.  I take loperamide for my IBS.

I think that the omeprazole will have an affect on the bacteria in your system that stomach acid would normally kill off, so I think I would feel inclined to return to you doctor and ask for a review just to make sure that the medications are not fighting each other.

I agree with OPA_AlanM and try cutting the omeprazole out completely for a while and see how that goes. Always carry gaviscon tablets and have a good supply of peptic (peppermint or aniseed liquid - any decent chemist will have or get it - cheaper, larger and more effective than gaviscon liquid in my opinion) in the house, 1 in the car and 1 by the bed for good measure.

Acid was/is the main thing I'm concerned about and was taking omeprazole too but I stopped and it didn't made much difference at all so I'm glad not to be taking it.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties,

      Tom
