baking soda during outbreak?

I read that baking soda was a good remedy to dry out sores. I tried it and it's so painful. Has anyone else tried it? Was it painful and did it help?

It's actually supposed to be cornstarch, which you apply as a powder, or Epsom salts, which you soak in as a sitz bath. Baking soda is only good for relieving painful urination, and you have to drink it in a mixture with water (the alkalinity neutralizes urine acidity, which is what exacerbates burning during urination). Were you applying it directly onto your lesions?

I tried it & I never read anything about drinking baking soda. It's suppose to be a thin paste that you spread on the sores. You're better getting Zovirax cream through your doctor. Gone in 3days

Google "baking soda water uti". It's a thing and I tried it myself during my first outbreak. Having said that, I Googled "baking soda paste herpes" just now and that's also a thing. Not heard of that before! Only dusting with cornstarch. Soaking in Epsom salts seems better than either, but I would also go with acyclovir cream. Definitely helps me!

Im so confused. My midwife also has reccomended lemon oil on lesions but this is also painful. I wouldnt think anything painful would work.

I have never seen lemon oil recommended for herpes lesions. Lemon *balm* is good for herpes, however, but this is not citrus-based (mint family, despite the name). Usually comes as a tea you drink or cream. Tea tree oil is often suggested for herpes. The cooling effect is nice but strong if never used down below before, so apply diluted and see how much feels comfortable. Hope that helps!

Personally, I'd not bother with cornstarch. No baking soda either, unless buring urination is an issue, but that's usually only with first outbreaks. Occasional soaks in an Epsom salt sitz bath are highly rated, however (soothing, aids drying/healing), plus tea tree oil (cooling, relieves itching, antiseptic). For pain, you can also use topical lidocaine or oral acetaminophen/ibuprofen.

The antiviral meds might have helped if taken immediately. Since it's probably too late for that, you can try acyclovir cream (not ointment) instead. The oral meds are recommended over the cream for various reasons (namely systemic coverage), but I have personally found that the cream helps hasten healing.
