Balance retraining.

Hi all, I have been suffering constant lightheadedness which has now increased to a critical level. A physiotherapist suggested I tried " balance retraining " which I had never heard of, and my GP hadn't spoken of it. She describes that sometimes one or more of our balance systems gets lazy, or for some reason our brain is confused with the balance signals it receives, and needs re educating. It seemed crazy to me but as nobody had come up with a better idea I thought I would give it a try. I read that it is a process used by people for whom balance is vital, ballet dancers for example, and I think it is an important part of Pilates. Have you tried this - does it work ??

Hi John, try looking up PPPD, it's a recently classified condition so not masses about it, but several helpful Facebook pages where you'll find a lot of people suffering with similar symptoms in varying degrees.

Chronic Subjective Dizziness (CSD)/Persistent Post/Percep Dizziness (PPPD)

    Hope this helps.

Thank you Brian, that is a very good lead. As it's a new classification I will have to think carefully how to introduce it to my GP.

GPS do not know enough on this subject. And will throw every anti-depressant at you.

An update. Since I originally posted last autumn the symptoms of imbalance/lightheadedness/weakness have increased such that I am now rather housebound. I contacted my GP on a number of occasions, and attended hospital outpatients for some rather limited tests - but the answer came back that I have PPPD and that is incurable. Getting rather depressed, and limited by Corvid 19, I contacted privately a specialist hospital in London who are offering me a rather expensive series of vestibular rehabilitation sessions. As far as I can tell the hospital is legitimate and it works with the NHS though going private does prompt quicker action. So - is PPPD incurable - is professional vestibular rehabilitation a cure - has anybody tried this and found that it works. I would be very grateful for any help.
