Ball of foot pain

Three and a half weeks ago I was at dance class doing jumps. As soon as we were packing up to leave I felt this pain in the ball of my foot. I went home, iced it and just assumed it would go away overnight. I was wrong. It hurts to put pressure on it, bend the toe up ( and a little bit when down.) I went to the doctor and got it X-rayed three days after it happened. It didn't show up broken and my doctor said it was a contusion and gave me a pre op shoe and crutches. She told me to contact her in 4 weeks if it wasn't better. Currently, it's not as bad as it was the first week and a half, but it has stayed the same for the past 2 weeks. Also my toe seems to now be involved and I'm feeling a bit of numbness in the area. Has anyone else had this? I know my doctor will want an MRI to check it it's a stress fracture but I don't really think it is and I don't want to spend the money. I have done research and read about sesomoititis but the only thing that doesn't make sense is that it happened immediately and not gradually. Also ice has never relieved any symptoms. I'm now walking on the side of my foot and I really want to get back to dance. Any suggestions or similar stories?? Thanks.

    Hi,

I developed pain in the ball of my foot  last year just  doing nothing it got worse over the summer months and then had pain across front of foot and mild swelling also my 2nd toe started to bend and become numb. My Gp was reluctant to do anything just said it could be arthritis but i had exactly the same thing happen with my other foot some 4 years ago and ended up it was a stress fracture and  i ended up having to have an operation.

This time i insisted on an xray  which he reluctantly agreed to,  the x ray showed no fracture but pain and swelling was getting worse and  my toe became quite splayed              (like a V shape)  i just knew that there was a fracture so i went back to Gp and asked for a referral to the orthapedic surgeon for a 2nd oppinion.

Following that  he arranged a MRI scan and told me that  the  toe was dislocated and  would need surgery he says this is because my arches have dropped and this caused me to be putting pressure on my toes . He also explained that a normal xray does not always show up stress fracture so  my advice to you is to  get referred to a surgeon for a 2nd oppinion. i gather you dont  live in the UK as you have to pay for treatment.

Keep me posted and Good Luck.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Yes, I live in the US but have pretty good insurance so it might not be too bad. What part of your foot/bone had the fracture? Was there pain 24/7 or did it come and go? I just want to get back to dancing and it's so frustrating. If it doesn't get better in the next few days I will contact my doctor. Some days are better than others and it doesn't normally hurt when I don't put pressure on it so I just kind of feel like I'm exaggerating or making it up but then the next day or in a few hour or when I put full pressure on it, it hurts. Does this really sound like a stress fracture? Thanks again!!

    Hi,

I had the stress fracture in my  2nd metatarsal  making my toe very painful to flex and the pain  was right accross the foot. this was worse sometimes than others but if i did a lot of walking on it  i would get pain under my toes (the ball of foot too).the main reason i had the op was because my toe was badly bent  and causing a problem with my foot wear.  i think its very possible you have a stress fracture from what you are saying but i am no Doctor.

I really hope you  get this sorted out  it may not mean surgery it depends how  you are,  it may be suggested that you see an orthoptist  to have inserts fitted in your shoes.

Good luck and keep me posted.
