Barrets Oesophagus - Anyone else have it

Hi,

So i am 29 and recently diagnosed with barrets, i have had a swollen stomach for a long time and the final test(Endoscopy) showed i had this.

Scary as they won't give me more info but to be tested in 3 years, i am trying to change my diet as it was extremelly bad and i am also stopping drinking.

I have never had pain with this but since i started taking omeprasol 20mg i find symptoms now like horsy voice, mouth burning with ulcers, cant eat spicy foods at all etc.

I was wondering are these normal symptoms and would this explain my swollen stomach as doctors do have a clue?.

I knew there was something as when i went for the ultrasound the girl had problems seeing my liver and kidneys due to the "gas" - that was her words.

Thanks in advance and it would be good to hear peoples thoughts on this.

    Sorry you're having such problems. It would appear that omeprazole doesn't suit everybody. Personally, it was a life-changer and 20 years later still is. However I have read on this forum that people have problems. If you didn't have the symptoms before taking it and now you have, then I suggest you get back to the doctors.

    One thing that is comforting in your case is that they are going to monitor you (I have short segment Barrets and they won't monitor me). Any progression of this disease appears to be slow moving so regular monitoring should keep you safe. Don't be scared but do get your symptoms sorted out. Take someone with you when you next go to the doctors - make sure they know as much as you about everything. Sometimes it's very difficult to express oneself in the doctor/patient situation but a concerned outsider can ask all sorts of questions. One other point, I find starchy things made of grain, wheat especially, give me terrible gas. Without the grain things are fine. Good luck and please try not to worry - they haven't just let you go, they are going to do a follow up..

      Hi and thanks for that, puts me at ease a bit.

      I tried writing down stuff i wanted to ask before but he looked at me like i was stupid. I just wish i could swollow food again this was probally the only symptom i had cant even eat stake now its horrible.

    If I were you I would google side effects of omeprasol and stick with it and keep looking because the leaflet you get with them and most of the sites will only list a few of the symptoms, eventually you will find a site that has a much longer list of them. Hope you are feeling better now. At least you know you can change your diet.

    I get annoyed that I am ill because my diet is already very good, never drink or smoke or take drugs and rarely have sugar or salt.

    At least you are in control of what you do or do not eat, it is far worse when you are at the mercy of others or luck.

    Sounds like the medicine is making you to low on acid. That is what happened to me I had to lower my dose to make the smyptoms go away.  Maybe you should try a different medicine that may work better for you

    I don't have Barrett's.  My main symptom was having a hard time getting a deep breath, i do have very mild asthma, I knew it wasn't asthma, I went through all kinds of testing Utrasound of my heart which I was misdiognosed they said I had Heart Failure which scared the crap out of me, so I went to a heart doctor and more testing was done, thank god no heart failure, then i went to a Pulmonologist more testing which showed nothing wrong, He told me I either had a vitamin deficency or I had silent reflux so he told me to go to a ear, nose and throat doctor, he put the scope in my nose and down my throat and said i had silent reflux this has been over a year now since I have been on prilosec.  I feel somewhat better and I am sure if I ate the way i am supose to I would feel even better.  At this point I am down to taking 1 prilosec every 2 days, I want so bad not to have to take the stuff.  and I am trying also to change my evil eating ways.  The more Prilosec I took the more symptoms I had such as more gas and bloating a little, scratchy throat and acid shooting into my mouth at least once a day, now that I am taking less prilosec I have no throat issues and today was the first time in about 2 weeks or more that I hsd anything come back up into my mouth.  My breathing problem is still here but it has lessoned so that is why i am hoping to get off this stuff in the next few weeks.

      Oh ok, i have ashama and have noticed with the acid it is much harder to get a deep breath so must just be a common side effect.

    I had similar symptoms when I was diagnosed with gastritis and oesophagitis. And they could not see much with the ultrasounds because I was bloated. Omeprazole should give you relief with your symptoms and not make it worse.

      I wish it is not getting any better, i just want the stomach to go down and that is it.

    yes i have just been diagnosed with barrets osophagus i am on lanszoprosole have had back ache for years and now after all this time they finally tell me the outcome of the gastroscopy was tested for h pylori but they never mentioned that in the letter

    it took me several wks to get this info from them i was ringing them up sometimes twice a wk with no luck till finally i asked them to email them to me i cant sleep at night get terrible back pain and around the bottom of the ribs belly ache is also present taking gavascone for the acid does anyone else have these syptoms with barrets? would love to hear from anyone about the condition thank you albert

    I have a swollen stomach also ! Hate it . I wake up with flat stomach .

    my stomach swells if I eat or not .  I have a  bad cough only at night . A few deep coughs . My acid comes out middle of the night does not burn but I sit up and burp

    I learned how to get the air out .  I also get out of breath !!!! 

    I did not all this was related . I want a new doctor who cares and talk to me and listens to me . I learned so much on this site .  I do take digestaCure  so times and 

    I take papaya . It works some what . I want my stomach flat !!! So bad 

    never new this was related to Barrett's .  Help
