Barrettes

hi all
my husband has been diagnosed with barrettes. He has had a hiatus hernia for many years. The problem is I am having such a problem with knowing what to feed him. I have read through some of the comments and it appears to be different for lots of you. Is it just acid or is it fat as well to avoid? He seemed to be doing quite well and then we went away and he ate too much. I presume little and often is better.
Do any of you get a metallic taste in the mouth or suffer any side effects from omeprazole?

You need to find your husband's particular trigger foods as we are all different and react to ffods differently.
Everyone with Barrett's has a hiatus hernia. It can facilitate reflux by obstructing the proper action of the muxcles that comprise the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter.
Barrett's is caused by frequent attack of acid and bile refluxing over a number of years.
Fatty foods are the worst as fat doesn't dissolve in stomach acid and can remain in the stomach longer with excess acid being sprayed on it that isn't neutralised. Eventually some bile may be permitted to enter the stomach to assist.
I'll send you a link by PM to a recipe book my charity produced a few years ago of tasty meals that have been tolerated by acid refluxers,

So, find the website BarrettsWessex org uk (or go via the Barrett's Wessex reference page listed on the right where you'll find the link as sites Google...). When you are on the Barrett's wessex site, click on the Sales tab and scroll down to the picture of the Cool Food book (as attached here). Clicking on it should open up the pdf file you may download freely.

I am scoped 2 yearly and am due this June, and I must say that I never suffered much from Gerd, just every now and again.
I tried many natural remedies, for digestive problems from the health shops and some helped, but not for long.
So recently I started my day with a banana and a bowl of Ready Brek Smooth Oats, ate less red meat, less bacon, etc, although I still do occasionally partake, but since taking the Oats,to which I add some clear honey,I feel normal and could eat anything if I so desired, and I feel hungry again.
I can even manage to get by on just one tablet a day,the other thing it has done for me is to stop my bouts of diarrhoea I use to suffer from on and off.
I also tend to eat less than normal, but more often, and drink very little alcohol.
It also seems to have stopped that awful pain from the hernia which was scary, often at night (mainly) I was troubled for hours, with this constrictive pain, from back to front of my upper chest.
Anyway hope this helps,I know it doesn't work for everyone, but just passing it on oh and by the way I ate a massive Christmas dinner with two helpings of plum pudding and brandy sauce, and suffered very little, just a bit more active on the loo the next day.
Best wishes with this,it's a damned awful thing to have.
Regards Malc

What did you first get scoped for to diagnose you with Barretts.
What symptoms did you have with hiatal hernia?
