Bartholins Cyst Absess

I'm 22 years old and I first noticed the bumb about a week ago and didn't think anything of it, it didn't hurt at first but it started to annoy me and I popped it. Now after researching what it is I realized that I shouldn't have popped it. But now it has swollen to twice the size and I'm in excruating pain. It hurts to walk, sit down, and lay down. And with me currently being on my period it's constantly rubbing up against my pad and making it worse. I have a Dr appointment next week but I need advice on how to make this pain bareable until then. Please help me.

I feel your pain as my cyst turned into an abscess really quickly and I couldn't walk, sit etc so went to gp after a few days of just hoping it would go away and was sent straight to hospital to have it looked at. It's a horrible process and embarrassing as its 'down there' but I'd seriously advise if you are in pain to get an emergency appt with your gp! Don't wait till next week, my pain developed so fast don't sit in pain if you don't have to. Xx

I know this site is based in the UK but I'm from the United States and my female doctor is a whole town away like about almost an hour drive. And I will have the money next week I don't have it right now as I don't have insurance at the moment.

I really feel for you as I have quite a good pain threshold and mine just got worse as the days went on, I have read a lot about people using Epsom salts on a cloth against the area and also using them in the bath to help with the pain however if it's an abscess you will prob need antibiotics too. I really hope you get some relief soon xx

I wasn't sure if they would see me ..I've always made my appointments after my cycle was done because I was never sure if they would see me. I will try Epsom salt bath and I know I will probably need antibiotics but I will have to wait until I go to the doctor. Though from yesterday when it started hurting to today it's grown like twice the size. All the research I have done says it grows slowly but it hasn't for me. If I had the money right now to go I would. But the hospital or Doctor won't except me without money unless it life or death. So I will just have to wait it out until then.

Yeah i read some info before about it taking a while to progress but mine went from no pain to not being able to sit in three days. Obviously in Scotland we don't have the same issues regarding insurance etc so I didn't have the chance to try the Epsom sit bath as I just went to my local gp who sent me to the hospital but my sister is a nurse and she did say it might have help relieve some discomfort however I think once it changes from a cyst to an abscess the best relief you will have will be getting treatment from the hospital so hopefully next week you will feel loads better. I didn't need to stay in hospital, the first time I had the abscess the balloon catheter drain was done under local anaesthetic and only took about 15 mins and I was home straight after and the second time I just had a cyst and I was taken for the marsupialisation operation at 12.30 pm and I was back in the ward at 3pm and allowed home a few hours later once they had given me some fluids and made sure I was ok after having a general anaesthetic (they won't operate if you have eaten/ drank recently, I was told at least 6 hours fasting, luckily I don't eat breakfast anyway or I would have had to wait about all day before they could operate) so i wouldn't eat/ drink in the morning before you go to your appointment just incase. Xx

My cyst isn't swollen or hurting at all anymore sense yesterday, it is kind of itching though. Any advice on if I could still have sex and if I should still go to the doctor?

I personally would wait a few more days to make sure it is definitely gone before irritating it with sex. I know this can be hard tho, I'm on week two with no Sex as still have stitches after the operation!! My doctor said that they can unblock themselves, it is rare but it can happen so maybe this is what has happened in your case. I would still go to the gp to get checked over. Better be safe than sorry, they might be able to give you antibiotics/ meds should it come back as the research shows that once you start getting them they come back xx

If you are experiencing this much pain you probably have an abcess. But don't worry. It should be lanced immediately.
Either take a nice hot bath for 20-30 minutes (sitz bath), with Epsom Salts if you have them, or do a hot compress on your cyst.
Other than that, Ibuprofen has helped me in the past.
Anti-Inflammatories are also mildy helpful for swelling but not pain.
I know exactly what you're going through, I'm sorry. It's terrible, I know.
