Base of the toenail is deteriorationg

recently, I discovered that the part of my toenail that connects to the skin has mostly disappeared. now, there is a gap between my skin and my toenail that is about 1 millimeter wide and 1 millimeter deep spanning across the base of my little toenail. At the bottom of the gap appears to be a small bit of nail, but I'm not sure. I have experienced no pain and there is no discoloration. I have also not injured my toe in any way.Does anyone know what is happening.
